The Great Waterfall in Croatia (Veliki Slap) is one of the country’s most breathtaking natural wonders, located in the famous Plitvice Lakes National Park. Standing at around 78 feet (24 meters) high, it is the tallest waterfall in the park and a must‑see for any nature lover visiting Croatia.
The sound of rushing water can be heard long before you see it, building anticipation as you follow the wooden pathways through lush greenery. When it finally comes into view, the scene is spectacular: a powerful stream cascading down a limestone cliff into a turquoise pool below, surrounded by dense forest and mist in the air. The waterfall changes character depending on the season—raging and dramatic in spring, softer but equally enchanting in summer, and framed by fiery colors in autumn.
Getting to the Great Waterfall is part of the magic. The trail offers several viewpoints, each providing a unique perspective and a perfect photo opportunity. While it can get crowded during peak tourist season, the sheer beauty of the spot makes it worth the visit.
Veliki Slap is not just a visual treat; it’s an experience that captures the essence of Croatia’s wild, unspoiled landscapes—powerful, serene, and...

It looks great! But:
Very busy, a lot of agitated tourists, expensive and unsave due to no siderails. Roadtrain and boats are good, but the waiting time today on the 12th of august was very long. Near 40 minutes, and getting from one place to another was awfull due to the sheer mass of photograping tourists. And with some pictures take about 5 minutes so some roads are constantly blocked.
Parking on park 2 greenzone was very doably with a 4x4. And I would never want to do that in any old front wheeled car...
Prices, extremely high. Likely due to the facilities, but as someone who prefers nature over people on holiday this wasn't great at all.
It looks very good, but all the people made it unenjoyable for me... And I wouldn't want to visit anymore there. When you can see anything, it looks amazing. But walking on wooden boards 2 ways when the whole setup is shaking isn't good at all. Seen people fall, hurt themselves and with minor injuries from walking.
I recommend not visiting in any tourist...
Read moreThe Great Waterfall is the highest and most impressive of the many stunning waterfalls in this Unesco world heritage site. The scale is such that the best photographs are taken from a distance. It's located in the Lower Lakes section of the park (in the north and accessed via park entrance 1. You'll definitely want to arrive early to beat the crowds. A lot of the tour buses from Split and Zagreb arrive around 10am so the entrance and ticket line gets extremely busy. By 2pm they are all leaving the park. A couple of hundred meters after entering the park you'll get great views of the waterfall from the elevated viewpoint position which is perfect for those with mobility restrictions. To get closer will require walking down the path and across a few bridges and takes about 15-30 minutes to reach the foot of the falls. May and early June are the best times to visit with less crowds (but still busy) and good water volumes after the...
