There are not many botanical gardens in Prague but this one is merited by its location away from the centre. Although it straddles a main road, the high wall and meticulously kept flower beds and pedestrian bridges make it a world away from highways and shopping malls. Furthermore it's free to enter.

In a large pond flanked by a whitewashed villa are an abundance of Koi fish. There you can spot moor hens, ducks and even the occasional nutria wallowing in its banks. The greenhouse to the rear houses a cornucopia of cacti and the main section hosts exotic plants from around the world.

The Botanical Garden of Malešice on the south-western slope of Tábor hill was originally created as a park of Jirásek's Villa. It belongs to the High School of Horticulture in Jarov and is mainly associated with the gardening apprenticeship school, but on weekdays it is open to the public free of charge. In the middle of the nineteenth century Josef Havlíček homestead with a garden used to stand in the garden. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the garden was transformed into a park and a homestead into a villa. Then the owner became an industrialist Jirásko, who owned the garden and villa until the end of World War II. The villa was rebuilt into a pseudo-Renaissance mansion. During the war, the building was headquarters of Gestapo and German military hospital. In 1945 the building was confiscated by the state on the basis of the Beneš Decrees. In 1948 the state transferred it to the capital...

Great gardens for wedding pics. We were there 3 times-and during our wedding shoot some old very unfriendly lady did not allow us in the greenhouse, although we had asked a month in advance to another warden - who did confirm we could. In the end we ignored the sad old woman and...
