We visited Aarhus for the day while on a cruise, and the Botanical Gardens and Tropical Houses quickly became one of my absolute favourite stops. Nestled right in the city, this beautiful green space offers a peaceful escape and a surprising amount to explore—all for free, which I really appreciated! The gardens themselves are lovely to stroll through, showcasing native Danish plants and thoughtfully designed landscapes. But the real highlight for me was the Tropical Houses. The glass domes are like stepping into a different world—lush, warm, and full of life. Inside, you’re surrounded by towering palms, vibrant flowers, waterfalls, and even butterflies fluttering freely through the air. As a houseplant lover, I was blown away by the size and health of many familiar plants I grow at home—jade plants, umbrella plants, bird of paradise, banana plants, philodendrons, and so many more. They looked like they were on steroids compared to my little potted versions! It was amazing to see them in this thriving, naturalistic environment. Whether you’re into plants, photography, or just want a relaxing place to explore, this spot is a must-visit in Aarhus. It’s a perfect mix of nature, education, and tranquility, right in the middle of the city. Don’t miss this gem—especially if you’re visiting Aarhus on a short stop like we were. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Just wow, glad my daughter was along to share her knowledge. Here are her thoughts as well. The greenhouses are beautiful and are well worth a visit. However, I was saddened to see the lack of pest control. While there are sachets with beneficial mites( swaraskii) from biobest to teach people about biological control there was nothing being done about larger more invasive species. Seen in the the photo above. My suggestion would be to bring Biobest back out and ask for one of their complimentary "insect scouts" to tell you what you have or hire an entomologist. Identification: Mealybug (Planococcus citri) Damage seen: Honeydew and black sooty mold. Present on every woody tree throughout the facility. Suggested treatment: Horticulture oil And/or isopropyl alcohol on a swab and rub directly on the eggs and mealybugs. Kyra Smith M.S.- Entomologist

Absolutely marvellous! The greenhouses and the park and maintained so well with a huge variety of plants. They have plants from all over the world as well as Danmark endemic. All signs and explanations are given also in English. And they provide more information using their App. Take the spiral staircase up into the tree house and enjoy the view. Lovely to have butterflies flying around you, there. Did I mention that it is absolutely free (no admission fee)? Nice coffee shop, too. Wow, what a great spot in Aarhus!

A family friendly, interesting place with all sorts of things to see. The botanical collection outdoors is not too extensive, but diverse and nicely signposted. The little trailing water features make a lovely experience out of looking at all sorts of interesting species. The glass dome is a must see: not only does it house a diverse collection of tropical trees and plants, but there is also a pond with piranas, beautiful (and abundant) butterflies as well as a tall wood structure to take the whole thing in from high above. The grounds are also extensive and pretty. Wheelchair and buggy friendly. There is even a cafe/restaurant and enough space for leisurely sitting down for a meal, a rest, a little play or chat time within the hot house complex. And the wooden windmill is a bonus - by the southern tip...
