As some other people have written in their reviews this museum isn’t quite finished but I’m sure this will be a spectacular museum when complete. Kengo Kuma Architects and Cornelius+Vöge Arkitekter designed the buildings and landscape as one do the fact the landscape isn’t complete means you need a bit of imagination to envisage how good this will be next summer. The headsets are the other missing element that really affects the experience of the museum - the narrative and purpose of the exhibitions are a bit tricky to understand at the moment. But they are only charging half price at the moment and then offering half price on your next visit (only valid until June 2022 though) but for the sake of getting a bit of a sneak peek of the architecture and exhibitions I think it’s worth it. Architecturally I particularly liked the entrance. The two existing half-timbered houses on each side if Hans Christian Andersen’s childhood home have been removed and replaced by glue-laminated timber structures resembling the structure of the houses that used to be there and red, traditional clay tiled roofs - super contemporary while still being humble to its listed, historic neighbourhood. I also enjoys the swirling ramps that just makes you automatically ‘flow’ along the exhibitions. Our kids also enjoyed it (they wouldn’t have listened to the information in the headsets anyways) and their experience will also be improved when the Ville Vau children’s universe opens in December (this used to be called Fyrtøjet / Tinderbox in the former museum). And to the cafe… we only had drinks but could hear from the other visitors that the food was great. Our kids weren’t a big fan of the hot chocolate as it was way too strong and rich (probably too good quality as the place is run by Meyers - a Danish TV chef’s deli chain). All in all we had a good experience even though it’s obvious to tell it’s not finished at all and much of the information over the speakers is only in Danish. But it’s got the potential of being absolutely brilliant. Hoping to be back in the summer when the landscape is mature and all the exhibitions are fully complete.
Stunning Odense & the Hans Christian Andersen House/Museum No visit to Odense is complete without a visit to the Hans Christian Andersen Birthplace & Museum, its multimedia tour through the life of this famed author, story teller and poet is truly a must do when in Odense! This interactive tour is extremely well produced and gives a fairly complete inside into the man and his life! His works translated into 180 languages which include such blockbusters as The Little Mermaid, The Tin-soldier are globally recognised fairy tales, which many kids will know! (Just make sure your head phones are fully charged) Of course roaming around the main City Hall square and surrounds, as well as the 11th Century St. Canute’s Cathedral, build in honour of the Danish King by same name is part of our visitations to places of faith & worship at each destination! The first impressions of Odense are impactful and the stuff lifelong memories are made off! Enjoy this little pictorial of our introduction to Denmark! #scandinavia #denmark #odense #museum #hanschristianandersen #stcanutescathedral #farmersmarketodense #europeantour #touristystuff
Is a nice exhibition telling the story of the author, since he was a child until in his last years. Is an interactive and interesting experience. They offer you a headphone so you can hear recorded audios near to the exhibitions. In my case sometimes the audio was confused, didn't seem to be talking about what I was looking for and sometimes if I give one step to the side, to have another look, the audio stopped. Some rooms were dark, with low light, so if you have a night vision problem or other condition related, you might feel a little uncomfortable. Price: adults grounds 170dkk and kids are free Bonus: the tickets allow you to go to Hans Christian Andersen Childhood Home Accessibility: I saw some people on wheelchair and stroller but I remember that in the final of the exhibition I had to go upstairs and I don't remember seeing an elevator. But maybe you can just go back Language: the staff speak English and they offer audio in English Facilities: They have lockers for free to keep your bags and wardrobe for your jackets Toilets were big and clean Food: there is a cafe just outside of the building
Was disappointed with this. I understand it's meant to highlight the poverty which H.C.Andersen was born into at the time, but some rooms were so bare that they looked empty. What I really found disappointing was the small plaque that indicated this is the purported Birthplace, which even Andersen himself never confirmed. It's mentioned as the best guess by the town. Almost feels, like an attempt to find something more to add to draw the tourists in. Admittedly the house is pretty from the outside as is the little area it's located in. But if you are not going to do all five museums that are part of the entry ticket fee, I would suggest just looking from the outside. It's quite small (15 minutes max I'd say) just like the other two museums that are about his life and work and the entry price of 110 DKK is for 5 museums in the city and for 5 it is reasonable. Remember tickets aren't available here. You have to buy them at the museum and come here.
I don’t know why I was surprised to find this museum to be an absolute delight. The clever design puts visitors right into the story of Hans Christian Andersen’s life, from his impoverished birth in the tiny house that is incorporated into the museum, through to his death as a fêted literary figure. There are mementos of his life, as well as statues, installations, projections and other wondrous exhibits about his stories. The provided headsets are offered in multiple languages and the audio is provided automatically as you step close to a story point. You can move as slowly or quickly as you like and enjoy everything the museum has to offer. The cafe is wonderful and open later than in many other cultural institutions. The gardens that wind their way around the building only enhance its beauty. If you only have time for one museum in Odense, I recommend visiting this one.
The new H.C. Andersen museum that's attached to the house looks super cool so far. We went there before it was fully finished and still had a great experience. When it's finished we can access the museum for half price again (because we've been there when it wasn't finished). The only thing that was unfinished was the fact that we should have headphones that guide us through the museum. I'm looking forward to having that full experience some time in the future. H.C. Andersens house that's attached to the museum was very interesting to see. And standing in the room where he got born was also a whole different but super cool experience. The whole museum was also built to make you feel like you're in his fairytales which made the whole experience way better! Through speakers they were reading out his fairytales in Danish. I'm looking forward to visiting again.
