Our 16-night journey through southern Ethiopia was beyond our expectations in so many ways. We sought a perfect mix of wildlife and culture, paired with the independence of having our own vehicle, driver, and guide, and Enat Ethiopia Tours made it all come true. Ashu was flexible and supportive throughout the entire planning process. Our driver, Biruk, was an absolute gem, careful on the long journeys and bumpy roads, helpful, patient, and generous with his time, knowledge, and advice.
During our 6-day trek through the mountains of Bale National Park, we were fortunate to be guided by Edris, an exemplary guide with a deep understanding of wildlife that made our experience even more enriching. He was not only knowledgeable but also caring and humorous, and he, along with cook Abu and two helpers who took care of the pack horses, ensured we were well looked after. Abu’s skills on a one-burner stove produced extraordinary meals! Thanks to Edris’s eagle eyes, we enjoyed sightings of twelve Ethiopian Wolves, Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Olive Baboons, Warthogs, and countless shy Grass Rats. We also spotted a variety of birds, including Steppe, Tawny, and Verreaux’s Eagles, Lammergeier, Lanner Falcon, and Peregrine Falcon, along with Blue-winged Geese and Ruddy Shelducks. The mountain landscapes were striking—bleak but beautiful, with sweeping views, incredible columnar basalt formations, and fields of stunning flowers like helichrysum everlasting and red hot pokers.
The evenings were chilly, and we huddled around a campfire as night-time temperatures dropped to minus 6°C. We were thankful for the warm clothing we brought (merino wool, down jackets, hats, and gloves). The camping gear was good and held up against the cold, though one of us brought an extra mat for extra comfort. While the trek wasn’t physically arduous, we did struggle a bit with the altitude, so taking it slowly was key. There were no campsite facilities, which made the experience feel like truly wild camping—a non-issue for us, but good to know for others. Over the 6 days, we didn’t encounter another traveler, making the whole experience feel incredibly special.
For the second part of our trip, we were guided by Daniel, who worked tirelessly to offer us a unique and fascinating look into the Omo Valley tribes. We had so many memorable moments with the Dorze, Ari, Mursi, Hamar, and Karo people,it was humbling to witness their lives and the creative ways they adapt to their challenging environment. Abata, our fantastic "fixer," was always arranging things behind the scenes to ensure we had the best experience. His communication skills and dedication made a huge difference.
The road journeys were long but filled with interest—there was so much to see along the way. Thank you to Enat Ethiopia Tours and the company’s owner for providing an unforgettable experience.
One final tip: If you plan to bring binoculars and long camera lenses, make sure to request a special permit from Enat Ethiopia Tours more than two...
Read moreMy Husband and I met Ashu on our first morning in Addis - he had the biggest smile. Ashu welcomed us in true Ethiopian style by congratulating us on arriving 7 years younger as per the Ethiopian Calender.
Ashu was courteous and he never discriminated age, as he helped me in and out of his 4WD which was very high for a 69 year old. We laughed.
Ashu was warm, chatty and informative. Our tour started in the city and then ventured off the beaten track giving us a real sense of this culture and way of life. Ashu’s knowledge on the history of this wonderful country was very interesting and educational, especially when Ashu guided us through the Ethnographoic museum. This intriduction to Ethiopias Culture and history was a perfect way to emerse and relfect, notably when our eyes met with Lucy a 3 million year old skeleton.
As we continued our visit to the Trinity Cathedral, the very resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie we drove towards the Entoto Hills for an overlook at the city from above whilst Ashu arranged a coffee ceremony from a local roaster- our very first time experiencing such dedication to the very much loved beans that we all love today.
The Sheromela markets where next and what a blaze of colour this was to our eyes, truely a fabulous experience and a must to add on your list. Ashu guided us through pointing out local goods and providing such insight to this vibrant market place.
It was getting close to Lunch time - we requested an authentic venue so we could really experince Ethiopias local eats. I was blown away - the food was delicious, the beer was cold, the staff where so kind and welcoming and the facilities clean and well maintained. My husband and I went back another 3 times. If you have the chance order the “ Injera “ .
Our trip continued for another day around Addis before our flight o Lalibela. Ashu arranged everything, we felt so safe. On arrival to Lalibela you could feel the dynamic change through the landscape. Ashu was very safe driving.
The history of Lalibela was remarkable, amazing and fantatsic. The Ethiopian people so hospitable, freindly and gelpful wherever we stopped, In particular the churches. My husband and I where blessed as we entered these incredible buildings , as the season was low we did travel as a private tour with Ashu. Depending on yoru time in Ethiopia - Lalibela is a must. We stayed for 4 nights.
Our next venture was flights down to the OMO Valley which was for a total of about 10 nights. Vistiting Arba Minch to Konso to Turmi to Jinka and more - Ashu always providing his knowledge and incredible experiences on the different tribes of the Omo. The accoodations clean, food was great everywhere and we made so many new friends with the locals. Truely a wonderful experience and eye opening moments that would make anyone want to visit again as we feel.
Cant wait to go back and if you decide too - please ask...
