This museum is a gem! Small, of high quality and free. You will get a good overview of Kainuu's history, especially from the 16th to 19th centuries. The exhibition is nicely designed and the artefacts are interesting and well explained. It's worth watching a video presentation about burning tar. It's difficult for a modern people to understand how hard the work and life back in times used to be. The history of Kainuu is strongly the history of tar burning and forestry....

Also there is a very interesting VR model of one of the city oldest building which I enjoyed a lot. And the books and other souvenirs in museum shop are interesting as well.
