Maritime Centre Vellamo — Attraction in Kotka-Hamina sub-region

ENGLISH BELOW! Käyn museoissa paljon. Rakennus on kaunis ja täällä on paljon nähtävää, mutta jos laivat pääasiassa 1800- ja 1900-luvuilta eivät kiinnosta, näyttely on tylsähkö. Muutamia esineitä on 1600-luvulta, joitakin 1700-luvulta. Pääosin hylkylöytöjä, laivan osia ja miehistön omaisuutta. Olisin kaivannut itse laajemmin merenkulun historiaa, meren historiaa Suomessa, kalastusta jne. ihan niin kaukaa kuin mahdollista. Yhdessä nurkassa on vähän kivikautisia esineitä. Ei siis oikein napannut minua, mutta henkilökohtaisesti pidänkin erilaisista museoista.

I go to museums a lot. The building is beautiful and there is a lot to see here, but if you are not interested in ships mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, the exhibition can be boring. There are a few objects from the 17th century, some from the 18th century. Mainly wreck finds, ship parts and crew property. I would have wanted to explored the history of sailing, the history of the sea in Finland, fishing, etc. as far as possible. In one corner there are some stone age artifacts. So this place didn't really interest me me, but I personally like different kinds of museums.

A very special museum in Finland and Kotka. If you visit Kotka, you need to visit Vellamo. The museum itself is excellent and informative. Lot to see. Not only the permanent exhibition, but also the changing ones. Good place to have lunch too. Cafeteria has an excellent terrace, if you want to enjoy the weather.

The building itself is also monumental and neighboring new buildings make this area an architectural masterpiece.
