Lovely hiking above the Ribeauville village! We started from a small road near the parking and playground and we followed the "+" mark on the path. The distance until the two main castles is 7km (we did it in around 1hour ) and I would recommend athletic shoes and a lot of water. Both of the lower castles were nice, the first one had amazing views of the village and of the second one, whereas the second one (Chateau de Saint Urlich) was bigger and more interesting to explore. On our way down we chose a different path, starting from the second castle and we basically followed the red signs until the point where we initially started at the parking.

Old castle with beautiful view to Ribeauville. From the top of the castle, we can view the Ribeauville in a whole. This castle can be reached by hiking. The passsahe is quite challenging though. There is two alternative ways: from the park spot, you can either go left or right. Both need time around 1 hour to finish. The left way is quite rocky and steep but you can see the vineyard along your journey. The right way is more sloping and you can visit Castle Giersberg before you arrive at Saint-Ulrich (it's near though, around 200 metres apart). Prepare your body, we should have a better physique since we need to take a quite long walk.

Here's the deal with Château de Saint Ulrich - it is about an hour hike from the center of the village. Best path is to walk up the Grand Rue until you get to the white horse place and then take next right on the vinyard path and start climbing. It's mostly quite straightforward but there are some steeper lose spots. If you go later in the day / evening you can have the place to yourself. Take a moment to reflect on the river valley and the thousand year old chateau and the border and the history and then walk down and rinse your face in a fountain and get a cold beer. You've earned it.

Hiked up to first two castles and back down in 1hr 30 min at a steady pace with photos and some breaks. Walking shoes are a bonus, but hiking boots not necessary. Don't need to be athletic, but you do gain some elevation. Many areas to take breaks if you need. You can still climb the tower at Chateau de Saint Ulrich. The second one is mostly closed but still nice. Next time will fit in the 3rd at the top of the hill. Highly recommend little hike. Do bring water. Nice areas for a picnic at the first castle too.

Note to self - Read reviews first! :) Had a great time going to a place that we didn't look to see first that you must do a 1 hour hike to get to.... not a problem if we had prepared and given time. View was great! UPDATE: After staying the night the hotel hostess told us the most direct route to the castle... it is a hike but worth it! Walked the easy way back.

A wonderful hike through the vineyards and forests of the Vosges mountains, 45 minutes from Ribeauville. The castle’s position offers a great vantage point overlooking the town and the mountains in the back. The path is marked and there is a map at the beginning of the route. A great exercise that can be done with minimum preparation.

Description
The Château de Saint-Ulrich is one of three castles which overlooks the commune of Ribeauvillé in the Haut-Rhin département of France. It is situated at an altitude of 528 m. The present name of the site is from the chapel dedicated to Saint Ulrich of Augsburg which is found in the castle.
