The Secret Of The Lance — Attraction in La Roche-sur-Yon

A gripping display of horsemanship and pageantry, in a medieval castle setting. Joan of Arc has taken the best french knights to fight the English, leaving a young girl to defend the castle - spoiler - with a magic lance. Naturally, the perfidious Anglais don't come out of this too well, sneakily dressing as monks to surprise her and her garrison. The set itself is a major part of the show, but its location is not great. The seating faces South East (hard to tell, PdF visitor maps are aligned south-north!) so in the morning shows you are staring at a stage in shadow (under the castle wall) with the sun in your eyes. Better to opt for an afternoon...

This was our last show of the afternoon and it didn’t disappoint! The incredible tricks while on a horse at top speeds were my highlight, but to my surprise, the entire stone wall moved both up and down and backward and forward, as did the other turret. The mechanics of it all, was very amazing, but above all, the actors in their fine knights costumes, the damsels were strong women who took control of the situation. All of the acrobats, animal trainers and horse riders were impeccable. Not to mention the action packed performance. All very worth while despite not being billed...
