🇺🇸Port Saint André in Avignon was an amazing experience. The site is located on top of a hill, overlooking a beautiful and charming village—such a picturesque place!
There are two main places to visit. The first is the abbey, where you can walk through lovely gardens and explore the former residence of its past inhabitants. It also works as an art gallery, with informative displays throughout. Even the bathroom was surprisingly clean and pleasant! The view of Avignon from here is absolutely breathtaking. They give you a map with all the key spots and a suggested route. Midway through, there’s a cozy café run by a super friendly lady who speaks several languages. They serve refreshing popsicles and unique, healthy drinks. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, enjoy a coffee or an ice cream, and soak in the view.
The second part is the fort itself. You’ll find a catapult and, just behind it, an incredible view of the village of Saint André. Then, you walk through an old church and up to the top of the fort, where you can stroll between two towers—it kind of feels like a mini Great Wall of China! The views are spectacular. Inside, you’ll find displays about ancient weapons, archers, prisoners’ carvings, latrines, a bread-making area, and much more. It’s a fascinating place full of history. Definitely worth a visit!
Totalmente...
Read moreFort Saint-Andre is a 1300's era fort (castle) on the hill in Villanueve, right next to Avignon. The fort is fairly simple, there are few placards nor employees to guide you, but the views are amazing and there is something nice about getting say from the crowds and just experiencing the building and grounds themselves without a choreographed visit. In addition to the fort, there are gardens at the Abby (inside the fort, but separate admission). The fort is 6 euros and I believe the gardens are 7 (2018 prices). The downside for some is that the fort is not very friendly for anyone disabled; no elevators, lots of stairs, and unpaved pathways. When you visit, be sure to head to the little city of Villanove, it's very pretty with lots of little shops and cafes. Far less crowded than Avignon! How this review...
Read moreOur accommodation was a few km away from this port. We almost left the area and not visit it, until one day when we passed by it and decided to take a closer look. The entrance fee was very reasonable, and like most tourist attractions in France, the entrance is free for children (0-18 yrs). The tour was short (45min). We loved the view and the art exhibition. We found out interesting things about the rivalry between two important political powers holders. It is worth your time. If you come by car, there is parking close by. As you leave the fort, you’ll be able to take a nice stroll into the small town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. It is a very nice little town, with coffee shops, narrow streets and nicely...
