I don't normally review on here, but felt I had to due to the 1 star review, which I wholeheartedly disagree with.
We chose this hotel as we simply wanted a break from reality for a week. We wanted somewhere relaxing and quiet. We chose perfectly. From start to finish, our break was wonderful.
We chose a room with a balcony. Would highly recommend this. Our biggest issue with the room is the lack of Fridge. The cleaning staff went over the top on one day. We had a plastic bag with treats (for our journey). They took this bag, thinking it was rubbish. We got it back, but if you have a tenancy to bring your own food, hide it away.
Generally, the sort of person who stays in this hotel is the sort of person who likes to travel around the region. We noted a lot of people liked to cycle. This (for us) was perfect as the entire week we were here, we had the pool to ourselves.
The Hotel is small, so no room is too far from the pool. Due to being near the top of a hill, the pool benefited from sun from the morning until around 6pm.
The setting of the hotel is beautiful. The outdoor garden area is stunning to sit in, day or night.
The breakfast was, as expected, wonderful. As the holiday progressed, the eggs at breakfast got slightly worse. From scrambled to "gloopy". I asked a waitress for some more cooked scrambled eggs... "of course" was the answer and they were brought to the table! The service was wonderful and nothing was ever too much.
This was the same for the reception staff. All of them were always helpful. Whether it was directions into town and recommendations for a restaurant, to booking a taxi for us.
Some reviews say the hotel is situated at the top of a HUGE hill. I agree that it's at the top of a hill, but it's far from steep.
The hotel is around 10-15 mins (MAX, depending how fast/slow you walk) from the centre of Villeneuve-les-Avignon. Here there are loads of restaurants and a few shops. There's also a convenience shop to get snacks / food (remember, no fridge in the room).
The hotel is approx €20 from the central Avignon train station. There are also buses daily that go from Villeneuve-les-Avignon to Avignon central. These do stop at around 9pm, so you may need a taxi home from Avignon, but this was also around €20. If you don't want to go into Avignon, there are plenty of restaurants in Villeneuve-les-Avignon to go to.
There is a set menu every night in the hotel; we didn't try this as compare to the town, it was quite expensive. There was also an à la carte menu, but we didn't try this.
Did we enjoy our time? YES Would we...
Read the genuine reviews, this is DEFINITELY not a 4 star hotel, it should be re-inspected and downgraded. I will try to be brief. Dirty carpets (see photos), used tissues in room drawers (see photos), half empty beer can in bathroom cupboard (see photos), dirty headboards (see photos). I was thinking of treating my wife to a night in a 4-star hotel. My garden shed is cleaner. Shower head clogged with limescale, sink trap clogged with I don't know what, toilet filler tap taking 20 minutes to fill. When I took the rubbish I'd found in the room to reception, the manager looked annoyed but didn't apologise at all. Also note that if you have a room overlooking the courtyard, you won't be able to sleep because of the loud conversations until 1.30am. I paid 170 euros for a sleepless night in a room that hadn't even been properly cleaned. I have written to both the hotel and its head office, but neither has bothered to reply. If you read the responses to comments here, you'll see that the manager changes every few months, which means the hotel has a huge staff turnover problem, which tells you all you need to know about the head office and its poor management. There are dozens of hotels within a mile of this place. Spend the same amount on a 2-star hotel and dinner. You'll get the same quality, plus dinner!
Edit - As you can see from the reply below, the management just do not care. They cut-and-paste a generic reply and have no intention of improving their hotel. Why on earth would I ever go back to Fawlty Towers?! I only asked for a refund of €70, as I felt that was a fair price for such a poor stay, again, they completely...
Read moreWe were disappointed with our experience because the images on the website did not match the actual quality of the stay. The furniture and rooms were outdated and damaged. The smell was unpleasant and stale. The toilets smelled like public restroom. The bed headboard had leather coming off as if a cat scratched it all over. It was hidden by the pillows so wasn’t evident right away. The sinks and bathtub were pretty nice, bathtub with jets. That was the only thing we enjoyed. The cabinets and doors were very outdated with paint pealing off. The bathroom door had broken pieces and handle falling off. Coffee wasn’t available in our room; except the powder packets but no milk was offered. We asked to give us a Nespresso but the hotel didn’t want to provide it. We asked if we could get their lobby coffee, but were told we would be charged. In the end, the hotel did not charge us for coffee, which we appreciated. Overall, the hotel has great potential and can be a very cute place if they update the furniture and remodel the rooms, to make it more aligned with what the images on the website are...
