The Pont du Gard is an architectural masterpiece that truly captivates with its fascinating design. Its majestic arches, meticulously constructed by the ancient Romans, stand as a testament to their engineering prowess. The bridge's blend of form and function is simply awe-inspiring. Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, the Pont du Gard offers stunning scenery that enhances the overall experience. The gentle flow of the river beneath the bridge adds to the tranquil atmosphere, making it a perfect place to relax and soak in the surroundings. One of the notable aspects of this site is its commitment to cleanliness and environmental preservation. The Pont du Gard is remarkably well-maintained, ensuring that visitors can appreciate its historical and natural charm without distraction. The crystal-clear waters of the river that runs beneath the bridge are a sight to behold, and the opportunity to swim or simply dip your toes in this pristine river is a refreshing bonus. I left the Pont du Gard with a deep sense of wonder and a promise to myself that I would revisit this extraordinary place someday. It's a destination that leaves a lasting impression and beckons you to return, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of history, natural beauty, and tranquility.

A spectacular example of Roman engineering. Most people will drive here (it's hard to get here any other way to be honest), and there is a charge to exit the car park. However, parking is free for local residents - bring your ID and proof of address for each person, not just for the car driver. I came just after it reopened to the public after being closed for Covid-19, so there were not too many visitors. Masks were compulsory in the museum but not in the open air. The museum explains much of what you see, but I would still have liked better explanations of how the Romans knew that they needed to build the entire aqueduct - 50 km - with just a 12 metre drop. The museum was also poorly lit and many of the exhibits were closed for hygiene reasons. The aqueduct itself is great. You can walk across the lower section of the bridge (added in the Napoleonic era) and can climb up the hill to see views from the top. It is no longer possible to walk across the top of the aqueduct itself. There is a restaurant and cafe, open again, though a little expensive. I recommend taking a picnic lunch and eating down by the river!

For history and engineering enthusiasts it is one of the objectives not to be missed when visiting Provence. A true marvel of ancient engineering that allowed water to be transported 50 km away. The visit to Pont du Gard is easy to fit into any program/tour of Provence and the time you need to allocate is a minimum of 1.5-2 hours. Of course, you can spend a whole day here in which other activities can be combined: walking or cycling in the Gardon gorges, beach, swimming, kayaking. The whole site is extremely well organized. Access is relatively quick from Avignon, well signposted, and has access roads to the car parks on both sides of the river. Parking costs 9 euros, with no time limit, and with the parking ticket, you can enroll the car in a loyalty program that will allow one year free of charge access. Entry is free. Fees are charged only for guided tours, and the schedule is displayed at the reception center, which is also very well organized with exhibition spaces, (clean) toilets, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, etc.

This is an amazing achievement of the Roman era. Built in the 1st century to transport water 30 miles from Uzés to Nîmes, the Romans quarried the stone and transported it 600 metres to build the highest aqueduct they’d ever built. The largest arch is 80 metres high - all built without mortar. The aqueduct operated successfully for 400 years. The walkway from the left bank to the right bank of the River Gardon was added in the 18th c. The site is very well managed and signed. There is ample parking (9€ in May 2024), and you can walk the bridge and picnic on the site for free. You can also buy a ticket for €8 which gives access to a children’s area, temporary exhibits and a professionally produced film. I bought the ticket and enjoyed the film. The subtitles could have been in a larger font or on the screen longer, but the film doesn’t really rest on the subtitles. There are clean washrooms (toilets) on site, a restaurant and place to sit in the shade. A very well-managed site for local people and tourists alike.
