In June, myself and my partner went on a walk from our bnb in Vers Pont Du Gard to see the Pont Du Gard aquaduct on the first night of our stay. The owner of our accommodation, a local person, recommended us to cross the river to get access to the park. We did so, alongside other people also crossing the river both directions that day. We suddenly appeared in the wood with the campsite in it. No signs, no fences, we decided to walk through. We got a beer and not very good and overpriced chips in the restaurant and sat there for a while. We chatted to the staff in the restaurant briefly and were told that there will be live music the next day. We decided we will come back the day after. We then left the camp through its main gate and the employee at the gate said bye and we did so too.
The day after we again crossed the river in the same spot, walked through the camp, even bought swimwear in the little shop in the camp but this time when trying to leave through the main gate we got stopped by a different employee working that day. She asked for wristbands to access the place, we said we don’t have any, we’re just walking through and went in to buy swimwear in their shop and that this is our second time in the camp. She kept repeating that we’re not allowed to enter the campsite and now we have to stay because we did something wrong! I was very surprised about this reaction and both me and my partner with a calm voice tried to explain to her that we crossed the river and none of the previous employees in the camp said anything to us regarding us not being allowed to enter. She either didn’t understand English or was just too unqualified to communicate in a reasonable manner but kept repeating aggressively that this is not ok and she has to call someone at us and that we’re not allowed to leave. I said that she has no authority to tell me to stay as I did nothing wrong and there wasn’t any sign saying we’re not allowed to enter. As she was calling someone on her walking talky talky while trying to kept repeating that we’re not allowed to leave, we decided to walk away as that seemed as the most reasonable thing to do. Less than ten minutes after this incident we were walking close the entrance to the camp again and from a distance we saw this very same employee talking to a police in a car! We decided to turn around and leave Pont Du Gard park through its main entrance. Did she call police at us or was it just a coincidence? We will never know and no matter what this was an extremely stressful and unjustified experience with this campsite employee. It is not ok to have your stuff aggressively escalate “problems” that are not even real problems. There was no sign about not being allowed to access the place. Train your employees better in communication and resolving issues and make it clear that you don’t want people who don’t stay in the camp to access the shops inside. Maybe fence up the whole place if you so mind that we went in a spent money. Very...
Read moreThis is a very attractive campsite in a fantastic location. Not only is it a good base for visiting Avignon and other Provence towns, it is literally 15 minutes walk to the Pont Du Gard. |You can enjoy the magnificent Roman aqueduct, and have a refreshing dip in the river. My teenage sons enjoyed jumping off rocks above a deep section. |The campsite is wooded, so there is plenty of shade, but the pitches are not exactly clearly defined. Some may struggle with the lack of privacy. |We went in peak season, so the place was very busy - especially the small pool. We were located very close to the bar and entertainments, so it was noisy. We did not enjoy the off note singing on karaoke night. |Overall we enjoyed our stay, but this place is expensive and I did have a couple of issues. One is that the only water taps are located in the shower /toilet block which was quite far away. In such a hot climate, it was frustrating to have to walk so far for water on a site that charges 60 euro a night. Also, every morning, I was turned away from the shower block by cleaners, and made to walk even further to the next one. |More water taps, and showers cleaned later in the day would have made this...
Read moreWe really liked this site, there are designated pitches but you choose your own and inform reception of the one you have taken. The site is nicely laid out under the tree which offer some shade on the heat (it’s been 35-38C!)
There is easy access to the river which is slow moving and reasonably safe to paddle in. I could walk the whole way across without getting my shorts wet and it’s quite wide.
The Pont du Gard is the show piece in the area and it’s only a short walk. Absolutely stunning piece of Roman architecture and so worth the walk. There is a cafe and a restaurant at the bridge should you wish to use it
On site the pool is a pleasant place to sit and soak some sun and good enough for a swim. The staff are very friendly and there is a nice bar and bistro. We only used it for drinks but it was a nice place to...
