Stade Mayol — Attraction in Toulon

One of the many exciting places to visit when in Toulon will be when you attend a rugby march of TRC TOULON RUGBY CLUB. Some of the worlds best rugby hero's like Mathieu Bastareud, All Black outside centre Malakai Fekitoa, Kiwi inside centre Ma'a Nonu, Left wing Semi Radradra and right wing Josua Tuisova from Fiji, Top 14 TRY SCORER Chris Ashton and a fire wall of Sringboks like Duane Vermeulen, Bryan Habana, Juandré Krüger, JP Pietersen, Marcel van der Merwe are all performing here every 2nd Saturday of the month. Stade Mayol is next to the Port where you find a multitude of restaurants bordering the port. So get up early to strole through the small ancient streets before you hitting one of the restaurants...

🇬🇧Stade Mayol & Surroundings – A Sad Decline

I visited Stade Mayol again after almost 19 years, and I was truly disappointed by how the surrounding area has changed — and not for the better. The area around the stadium feels unsafe, and there’s a strong sense of insecurity, especially when walking around before or after a game. Thankfully, there was a solid police presence, which was somewhat reassuring.

The bars and food courts near the stadium are overcrowded, the streets are dirty, and it just feels run-down and neglected. It’s nothing like the vibrant environment I remember. The main road is unpleasant to walk, while the waterfront offers a much better, cleaner, and safer experience.

It's painful to say, but this once-iconic location has lost some of its magic. A legendary stadium should have surroundings that reflect its history — right now, it doesn’t.

Je suis retourné au Stade Mayol après près de 19 ans, et j’ai été vraiment déçu par l’état des alentours. L’extérieur du stade donne une sensation d’insécurité, et on ne s’y sent pas serein, surtout avant ou après un match. Heureusement, la présence policière était visible, ce qui rassure un peu.

Les bars et restaurants autour sont surchargés, les rues sont sales, et l’environnement semble laissé à l’abandon. Ce n’est plus du tout l’ambiance dynamique et agréable que j’ai connue. La promenade en bord de mer reste agréable, mais les rues principales sont désagréables à parcourir à pied.

C’est triste à dire, mais ce lieu emblématique a perdu de sa splendeur. Un stade aussi mythique mérite un environnement à la hauteur de son histoire — ce n’est plus le cas...

Came to watch Quins play the mighty Toulon. What a great stadium. Most stadiums these days are out on ring roads. This is right in the centre of town two minutes from all the bars and restaurants in the port. Those lucky enough to have flats above the southen stand seemed to be having parties with fans on the balconies.
