Arrived at 12.20pm on a Sunday for the 12.30pm English tour (website listed 12.3pm so I assumed this meant 12.30pm as all their German tours were listed as such... 11am, 12pm, 1pm, etc with commas in between). However when I arrived I was told the next tour was at 3pm and I'd missed the one at 12pm so I could visit the gardens and museums until my tour (which was included in the ticket of 14euro). I mentioned what it said on the website about the time to the ticket lady in the gift shop who said she would let management know. So was already a bit disappointed. One of the gardens was gated off so couldn't see that. The natural history museum was all in German as well as the museum of garden art. If you're going to have an English tour then I think you need to cater for English speakers in the museums too especially as it's included in the ticket. The cafe was closed and when I went back to ask the girl at the gift shop about this she said she was sorry but didn't know why. This was very disappointing as I'd planned my whole day to have lunch in the cafe. So then not having enough time to go somewhere else for lunch (and a lot of places being closed on a Sunday) I had to go through the 70 minute tour starving of food. The tour guide was ok but didn't even introduce himself or his name and most of the rooms had no furniture and some they didn't know what they were used for so it became a bit boring. Have been to many other palaces and gardens that were a lot more interesting for the same price. Just be sure to check times properly and maybe call to see if the cafe is open before you go. Hopefully in the future they will add English to the museums. Overall spent...
Read moreThe entrance to the palace tour is a bit hidden but easy to find as long as you follow the markers/map. Just be careful when going down the stairs on a rainy day, it can be a bit slippery right in front of the door.
We booked tickets online and were let in after the friendly staff scanned our QR code and we stored our bag in one of the lockers. An audio guide is also available via QR code and the narrators were VERY enthusiastic.
While quite interesting the tour through the palace was also quite short. After going through the basement and up the stairs again, we were asked to put on slippers that fit over our regular shoes and were free to enjoy the majority of rooms on the ground floor afterwards. Paying 14€ felt relatively expensive despite the overall pleasant experience. In Bavaria, for example, there are many places that you can enjoy for HOURS at a similar price.
After our visit to the palace we explored the surrounding parks which were very beautiful, well maintained and surprisingly extensive.
In short, if you are really interested in such palaces, Schloss Benrath is worth a visit. If not, you are better off enjoying the surrounding...
Read moreJust a short drive from Duesseldorf, this castle is located in a much quieter, slow paced location. Parking was a bit confusing, but there's a parking lot right down the street and there are signs that direct you to 'schloss parking'. Make sure you bring cash for payment. The castle is more like an estate, and its about a 10 min walk from the parking lot. I bought tickets online, and it's a bit confusing trying to figure out where to go. I wish there was a directory outside that told us what each building was. With the pass we were able to tour a little museum with local animals (all stuffed) and other information about the local land. Across the way, there were stairs to go down that lead us into the estate. You must leave your bags in a small locker room and when you go upstairs, slippers are to be worn over your shoes. The man at the locker room explained all of this to us. The estate was beautiful! It was minimally decorated, but the architecture and wall art was enough to keep everyone's interest. There's a large park in the back that we didn't have time to explore. But overall, I would recommend visiting...
