Weser Stone — Attraction in Hann. Münden

A wonderful place for a relaxing walk and to enjoy the beauty of nature, especially in August when the summer weather is warm and pleasant. This spot is not only scenic but also historic. The stone here tells a charming story about the meeting of two rivers — the Werra and the Fulda. At this exact point, the two rivers ‘kiss’ and give up their names to form the Weser River, which then flows through Germany all the way to the North Sea. It’s fascinating to stand where this natural transformation happens and imagine the journey of the water from here to the ocean. The Weser Stone marks the point where the Weser originates from the confluence of the Fulda and Werra. Here is the old German linguistic border between Upper and Lower German, with Werra and Weser being synonymous. The name Weser/Werra is cognate with other river names such as the Vistula in Poland and the Wear in England, from the Indo-European root weis-, to flow. The river nomenclature is spelled out in verse on the stone, with a patriotic touch:

Auf dem Hann. Mündener Tanzwerder steht der Weserstein unter einer Kastanie. Darauf ist zu lesen:

Wo Werra sich und Fulda küssen Sie ihre Namen büßen müssen Und hier entsteht durch diesen Kuss Deutsch bis zum Meer der Weserfluss Hann. Münden, d. 31. Juli 1899

Der Stein besteht aus heimischem Süßwasserquarzit. Seit 1899 steht der Stein am Ursprungsort der Weser, die nach mehr als 450 km bei Bremerhaven in die Nordsee mündet. Seitdem ist der Weserstein eine beliebte Sehenswürdigkeit bei den Besuchern Hann. Mündens.

Der Weserstein befindet sich nur wenige Gehminuten von der Hann. Mündener Altstadt entfernt und bietet sich bei einem Besuch ideal für einen kleinen Abstecher an. Von hier aus hat der Besucher auch einen guten Blick auf die Weserliedanlage auf dem Südwesthang des Questenbergs.

Zwischen Mai und Oktober starten vom Weserstein aus täglich Schiffsrundfahrten, die zu einer Entdeckung des idyllischen Weserberglandes vom Wasser aus einladen.
