The Mangturm, located in the scenic town of Lindau by Lake Constance, is an embodiment of medieval architecture and history, offering a blend of visual and cultural delight.

Historical and Architectural Significance

The Mangturm, part of the medieval fortifications of Lindau, was originally built in the 12th century. With a height of 20 meters and equipped with arrow slits, it served as an ideal observation post at the end of the city wall, safeguarding the sea harbor. This tower, once critical for defense and signaling, is now affectionately known as the “Old Lighthouse” following the completion of the New Lighthouse in 1856. Today, the Mangturm stands out with its distinctive glazed tiles, making it a popular subject for photographers and a cultural jewel for the town .

Visitor Experience

The Mangturm offers visitors a chance to enjoy breathtaking views of Lindau’s historic old town and the expanse of Lake Constance. Its opening for public visits provides a unique opportunity to witness Lindau’s history from an elevated perspective. Visitors can also appreciate the tower’s role in the city’s past, as it was previously accessible only during special events or storytelling sessions .

The 65 foot Mangturm Tower part of the trio of prominent landmarks of the harbor, which also includes the stately lion and the 19th century lighthouse that guard the entrance. Built around 1200, the tower served as a signal and lookout tower for Lindau when it held the status of an Imperial Free City during the time of the Holy Roman Empire—meaning it held the high status of being subject only to the direct authority of the German king and not to any local or regional authorities.

The tower is not open to the public but is sometimes accessed through local guided tours, but it certainly adds to the picturesque charm along...

Mangturm in Lindau is one of those iconic towers you just have to snap when you’re here. Colorful, photogenic, and the kind of place that instantly brightens your day. It looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale, but it’s been standing since the 12th century! Originally a watchtower, back in the day someone was probably staring out for pirates, while nowadays you’re just waiting for someone to shout “cheese.”

And if you think it’s just another tower, those red and white stripes aren’t a fashion statement — they’re traditional colors that helped ships spot the harbor from afar and know they were...
