A very fun and interesting experience at Technik Museum, Speyer. Tickets at 28€ per adult including iMax was actually very worth it, even though the prices seem steep.
There were lots going on in this Museum, with a lot to see, read, learn and explore. A single day wasn't even enough for us to absorb everything at the museum. There are also plenty for childrne to see and play, as they have children playgrounds and activities.
Unfortunately, we went on a public holiday, which meant that there was a lot of people, and skipped a few of the exhibitions (eg. inside of the ship, spaceship and some planes) because of the long queues to enter or simply because of the large crowds.
But there was still so much more to see despite not being able to see some of the exhibits. We noticed the museum even had events where some of these vehicles are actually driven by the professionals, in a parade like festival within the compound. Seems like something for us to look forward to on our next visit.
Parking is a flat fee of 8€ on their property but if you are a visitor at the museum you can get a 5€ flat rate at the counter.
With a good variety of food options at the museum compound, and though the prices would be higher than eating outside the museum, they are not exorbitant. Prices at their souvenir store was reasonable and not over the top.
But visiting this museum on a good sunny day would be ideal as there is a large percentage of their exhibits that are outdoors and it would not be so ideal to climb their metal stairs when it is wet or explore the outdoor exhibits...
Read moreThis museum is very nice. Their eye catcher is the Boeing 747-200B on display, the Antonov AN-22, the SAR John T. Essberger hospital-ship and the U-boat which all are accessible. The museum has a lot of oldtimers, fire trucks, locomotives, (parts of) fighter planes and the ever fascinating Belgian-made organs. In the spaceflight-exhibition there is the Spaceshuttle Buran from Russia together with more space-oriented displays about the American Spaceshuttle and the different Apollo-projects from NASA.
A bit of a complaint would be you have to pay an additional fee to get each organ activated to play a short song. Their IMAX-theater has films which are like in Technik Museum Sinsheim: only dubbed in German. German is ofcourse an important language in Germany, but it is a pity they don’t serve their international guests with a few options in the original language with German subtitled.
There is one major restaurant in Hall 10. They serve regular set-meals like at Sinsheim, but they also have a pizzeria!
It’s a pleasure to visit this museum, but their Sister-museum Technik Museum Sinsheim is maybe a bit better organized and has a slightly better or a more attractive set-up which gives a better impression about what they have. We took a 2-day package to visit both Technik Museum Sinsheim and Technik Museum Speyer with a stay in Hotel Sinsheim. Don’t forget to buy yourself a zero euro note! 💶 After all: It’s...
Read moreOverpriced and in an urgent need for a freshen up.
A nice day for a day out for anybody interested in vehicles, trains, and planes. But many of the exhibits are in an urgent need of a freshen up ... protective perspex screens are yellowed and completely scratched, hindering the immersive experience. It wouldn't be a lot of work to get these changed out! Cockpits and controls are dirty under thick layers of dust and sometimes even broken glass ... it would be nice to see a bit more love and care for the exhibits! The IMAX is a nice experience, but again, it is quite outdated and pricy in the times of HD immersive sphere cinematic experiences - many of the shown movies are quite old with SD quality and an outdated 80s style of storytelling. Parking is charged extra at 5 Euro on top of an anyway quite expensive day out, and should in my opinion be included for free for visitors.
It's a nice place - but a bit too expensive for what it currently offers ... a bit more love and care from management could easily solve this...
