We have been members of this museum for a couple of years. Our most recent visit was May 2025. We went specifically to see a temporary exhibition of the Greek- American painter Nicholas Kovtaxis (Νικόλας Κονταξής). The museum is four floors, each with a different theme, such as contemporary, Greek, etc. Two of the floors are more or less static exhibits, but the other floors have rotating exhibits. The museum is rarely crowded so it is possible to get close to the pieces and spend as much time as one wishes contemplating pieces. The galleries have seating available for contemplation. The cafe is huge and has a beautiful atrium that feels like being outside, but with the comfort of climate control. The stairs have art nooks and for me, some of the larger pieces are well viewed from the stairs. The bathrooms are spotless and impeccable. The gift shop has a decent selection of gift items, jewelry, mugs, cups, notebooks, prints, books and much more. We usually spend 2-3 hours per visit. Membership includes invitations to many events throughout the year centered around the collection and geared towards both adults and children.

A new-ish addition to the Greek capital's extensive constellation of museums of all sorts, B&E houses one the world's largest, and most magnificent, private art collection. Private in this case means eclectic, reflecting the personal, and excuisite, tastes of Basil and Elise Goulandris. It is housed in a meticulously restored early 20th century neoclassical building, unobtrusively extended to several times its size, primarily underground, and also in the former yard and on the roof. This loving bequest to the people of Greece was decades in planning, and delayed by years of litigation, involving relatives of the childless Goulandris couple, and even government entities. Excellent works from the 20th, and late 19th century, by art superstars, primarily paintings (all the great impressionists, also Picasso and others); drawings and prints; bibelots; a very unique, signed Theotokopoulos (El Greco); sublime sculptures; and high-value home furnishings. To say that this feast for the eyes warrants multiple visits is an understatement

A private collection available for the public now in a renovated classical building. The Collection focuses on the newest and contemporary art of Greek and foreign artists, including rare works of art of big names of the European avant-garde such as Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Miró, Klee, Giacometti, Bacon, Pollock, Lichtenstein, Chagall, Botero, as well as works of distinguished names of Greek avant-garde painting such as Parthenis, Bouzianis, Vassilios, Chatzikyriakos-Gikas, Tsarouchis, Moralis, Tetsis, Stamos, Sorogas etc. An audio guide is available for most of the exhibits, which was very helpful Don't miss visiting the cafe. There is a very nice outdoor sitting and the service is exquisite

An amazing museum for fine arts in the heart of Athens. The permanent collection consists mainly of artworks of the previous century. You can find some incredible pieces of art, by artists like Van Gogh, El Greco, Picasso, Bacon, Chagall, Monet, Modigliani, Rodin, de Chirico, Matisse, Giacometti and so many others... And also paintings of some of the most important greek painters, like Tsarouhis, Gikas, Moralis, Eggonopoulos, Parthenis and others. I visit it again and again. A very beautiful garden in the front of the museum, also. You should make a visit, if you're interested in artworks of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation is an incredible place to visit and a must on anyone wanting to get to know the Athen’s art scene. It is housed in a 1920 neoclassical mansion next to Agios Spiridon Church. It is located in the Pangrati neighborhood of Athens. It is about a 10 minute walk from Syntagma Square. If you don’t feel like walking, you can hop on Trolley 4, direction Agio Ioannis. Once inside, you have a place to put away your bag. Also, the foundation provides free audio guides, which is a plus! There is also a small gift shop and a restaurant/cafe with an outdoor court, if the weather permits.

This museum exists through a foundation and a private collection, and yet it is absolutely stunning. Apart from THE great ones, like The Louvre in Paris or Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, for instance, this has instantly become one of my most favorite museum ever. Their collection is nothing short of incredible, with so many different styles of art and famous artists. Keep it going, amazing job!! This museum is fully wheelchair accessible, and it has a "free entrance" policy for wheelchair users and the person who accompanies them. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, as it's in the centre of Athens and quite busy.
