Paralia Methonis — Attraction in Municipality of Pylos and Nestor

Paralia Metonis is a small, charming beach right next to the historic castle of Methoni and just a short walk from the main square, where we stayed. As often happens in Greece, the water here is incredibly clean and crystal clear, which is definitely the highlight. The beach itself is small and quiet, with just a few sunbeds available and the usual very affordable service.

What makes this spot special is that, if you move a little further away from the main beach — as you can see in the photos — and walk along the castle walls, you’ll reach a stunning area known by locals as “the pools.” Here, the scenery is breathtaking: natural rock formations create small turquoise basins of water. It’s not the easiest place to swim from because of the rocks, and diving can be a bit tricky, but once you’re in, the water is absolutely spectacular.

From the beach, you can also rent small boats or catch one of the few ferries heading to the nearby islands — we’ll write a separate review for the boat rental because it’s worth mentioning. If you manage to visit the small islands across the bay, you’ll find two or three stunning beaches with very fine sand and amazing colors.

Here in Methoni, the sand is more compact — not unpleasant at all, but it doesn’t give that “powdery white sand” vibe you might expect when paired with such clear water. Still, the sea is beautiful, the surroundings are picturesque, and Methoni itself is a lovely village to explore.
