A Must-Visit Gem: HMI & Zoo, Darjeeling My visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and the Darjeeling Zoo was absolutely outstanding, and I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Darjeeling! Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI): HMI is not just for mountaineering enthusiasts; it's a place where history, adventure, and inspiration come together. The museum within HMI is fascinating, showcasing mountaineering gear, photos, and memorabilia from iconic expeditions, including those of Tenzing Norgay, one of the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The institute itself offers a deep insight into mountaineering as a sport and its significance in the region. It’s both educational and inspiring to see how mountaineers are trained here for the world’s highest peaks. The views from HMI are also spectacular, with the backdrop of the majestic Himalayan range adding to the overall experience. Darjeeling Zoo (Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park): The zoo, located right next to HMI, is a treasure for wildlife lovers. It focuses on the conservation of endangered Himalayan species, and the experience was nothing short of magical. The zoo is home to rare and beautiful animals like the red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan wolf, and Tibetan wolf. The enclosures are well-maintained and designed to resemble the animals' natural habitats, which makes the visit both enjoyable and respectful to the wildlife. The combination of the HMI and Zoo is perfect for a full day of exploration, learning, and enjoyment. Together, they offer an incredible glimpse into both the world of mountaineering and the unique biodiversity of the Himalayan region. If you're visiting Darjeeling, this place should be at the top of your list. The educational value, the chance to witness rare wildlife, and the inspiring atmosphere make it a must-visit destination!

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) is one of the premier mountaineering institutes in the world. Founded on November 4th, 1954 by none other than Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa & Sir Edmund Hillary. Being the premier mountaineering institute of South-east Asia, HMI is also referred to as the Mecca of Indian Mountaineering. The Institute has an international reputation and has trained thousands of people from across the globe in mountaineering and allied adventure activities. The major access to Darjeeling by road is via Siliguri, 77 K.M. (via NH 55), which is connected to all the major cities of India. Bus service is available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand, Siliguri. Smaller vehicles are also available on seat-sharing/ hire from airport, railway station, motor syndicates / police motor stand. Facility of Pre-paid taxi stand from NJP Railway station & Bagdogra airport can also be availed. The four routes that one can opt from Siliguri to reach Darjeeling are: i) Tindharia – Kurseong route ii) Dudhiya – Mirik route iii) Rohini route iv) Pankhabari The institute is really stunning and each hair of your body will be straight after entered and visiting the institute. Must must visit once. Food court, shop and toilets are also be there. And after buy tickets for zoo the the same ticket will give you the access for HMI.

In short(hmi) Himalayan Mountaineering Institute which is with in darjeeling zoo.while buying darjeeling zoo tickets hmi entry fees will be charged together. Inside hmi there is other fun activities are there but for this separate tickets needed. For rock climbing is ₹50 per head, and many others activities like zip line, obstacles activity, rock climbing and so on,for it take extra time in hand because during our visit was so crowded. HMI is information bank for mountaineering related and promoting mountaineering as a sport. This would be be fun and full of knowledge of mountains and mountaineering. They have a museum where u can experience all kinds of equipment, shoes, clothes etc use during Mountaineering. Taking photos inside museum is prohibited. Tenzing Norgay was the first director of field training for HMI.HMI regularly conducts adventure, basic and advanced Mountaineering courses. These are very comprehensive courses. They are also highly subsidised to encourage mountaineering as a sport. There is cafeteria if felt hungry after roaming can have sip of hot coffee to relax and souvenir shop for shopping or just relax sitting near at bench and enjoying view from top of hill and enjoy the green scenery.

The HMI is located is the same compound of Darjeeling Zoo and BNAM. The HMI in Darjeeling Was built to commemorate the success of sherpa Tenzing Norgay. He was the first Director of field training in HMI. It comprises of a residential school for mountaineering students, Swiss style houses for the sherpa trainers, a well stocked museum with whole host of mountaineering artifacts and many expedition displays, a restaurant & a tea parlor, a souvenir shop and more. There is a huge relief model of the Himalayas showing you the entire range and all the principal peaks. Just outside the Museum building, there is a large open space. On one side there is a statue of Tenzing Norgay standing on a mount with a flag in his hand. He was the Director of Field Training until 1976 when he retired and an Advisor of the HMI until his death on May 9, 1986. This statue that was erected in his honor, was unveiled by none other than his companion during mount Everest expedition, Sir Edmund Hillary on March 25, 1997. A souvenir shop, an ice cream parlor, and a photo studio is also there I suggest every tourist to Darjeeling to visit this Institute
