The Cathedral Basilica of St. Stephen the King (Hungarian: Szent István-székesegyház), also known as the Székesfehérvár Cathedral, is a significant religious building of the Catholic Church in Hungary. It serves as the cathedral of the city of Székesfehérvár. The cathedral, with its rich history and architectural significance, stands as one of the most important landmarks in the city. Through the coronation of Béla IV in 1235, it became one of the coronation churches of the Kingdom of Hungary. Style: Combining elements of Gothic, Baroque, and Classical architecture. Construction: Built around 1230, with subsequent reconstructions in the 18th century. In its current form, the Székesfehérvár Cathedral reached completion between 1743 and 1771. The reconstruction was supported by Queen Maria Theresa, who established the bishopric in Székesfehérvár in 1777. This was immortalized on a marble plaque in the basilica (see photo). Patron Saints: St. Stephen the King (Védőszent I. István) Episcopal See: Székesfehérvár Diocese Protected Monument. The cathedral’s historical and cultural significance makes it a must-visit for anyone interested in Hungary’s heritage. It was exceptionally well renovated recently. It is beautiful inside as the photos illustrate. The choir and the altar were designed by the famous Austrian architect Franz Anton Hillebrand. The interior frescoes depict scenes from the life of King Stephen I, and the altarpiece represents the Stephen king kneeling in front of the Mother of God and was made by Vinzenz Fischer, while the imposing ceiling frescoes are from Johann Cymbala. In the undercroft of the Székesfehérvár Cathedral, the majority of the city’s bishops rest. Notably, the marble sarcophagi of King Béla III and his wife, Queen Anna of Châtillon (some theories suggest it might be King Coloman and Queen Felicia). Among the Árpád dynasty kings, only these tombs have remained undisturbed.

Must admit I did not go inside, but on the backside of the church is something resembling the tomb of the unknown soldier. Nothing outside to explain what exactly it is. But the outside of the church is also very pretty.

A templom helyére 1230 körül IV. Béla (itt koronázták meg 1235-ben) építtetett gótikus bazilikát. Mai formája is ebből az időből való. A török hódoltság alatt mecsetként szolgált. 1743-71 között átépítették,1777-ben székesegyházi rangra emelkedett. Itt őrzik a Raguzából visszahozott Szent István-fejereklyét. 1938-ban kapta XI. Piusz pápától a ,, basilica minor" rangot. 2015-ben megkezdték a teljes körű...
