Pataleshwar Mahadev temple is within the premises of Kalachuri group of temples. It’s towards the left side. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and consists of sanctum, vestibule and mandapa. It is said that Adi Sankaracharya installed Shiva Linga in this temple during his visit. The floor of the sanctum is 1.4 meter below when compared to the floor of the mandapa. Hence, the temple came to be called as Pataleshwar Temple.

A plaque on-site says that a 'shivling' was installed at this location by Adi Shankaracharya. The temple, considered to be one of the best examples of the Kalachuri period was constructed by King Karandev of the said dynasty. It is a part of the 'Ancient Temples of Kalachuri' in Amarkantak.

A very old temple.The ancient temples of Kalachuri period are situated in the south of Narmadakund just behind it.

These were built by Kalachuri Maharaja Karnadeva (1042-1072 AD).

The Machhendranath and Pataleshwar temples are excellent examples of architecture.

In 788 A.D. Adi Shankaracharya was born and he consecrated on the banks of river Narmada in Amarkantak. He founded Pataleshwar Mahadev in Amarkantak, now known as Surajkund today.

Tickets are sold by online method by Archaeological survey of India website..
