If you are visiting the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) is an absolute must-visit destination. It’s not just a tourist spot — it’s a monument of India’s painful yet proud freedom struggle. The place gives you goosebumps as you walk through the corridors once occupied by brave freedom fighters. 🏛️ Historical Significance Cellular Jail was built by the British in the late 19th century to exile Indian freedom fighters. Each prisoner was kept in solitary confinement — hence the name “Cellular” Jail. The stories of torture, struggle, and sacrifice are deeply emotional and make you realize the real cost of freedom we enjoy today. Inside, you’ll find photographs, sculptures, and descriptions of great patriots like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and others who were imprisoned here. Reading their stories in the actual cells where they lived and suffered gives you a powerful, emotional experience. 🎥 Light and Sound Show One of the main highlights is the evening Light and Sound Show, available in both Hindi and English. The show beautifully narrates the story of the Jail and the freedom fighters through lights, sound effects, and voiceovers — it literally brings history to life. The narration (voiced by Om Puri in Hindi) is emotional and very well done. It’s highly recommended to book tickets in advance because it gets crowded, especially during peak season. 🕰️ Timings & Duration Visiting Hours: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM Light & Sound Show: Usually around 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Hindi) and 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM (English). Time Required: Around 2 to 3 hours to explore properly, and extra time for the show in the evening. 📸 Things to See Inside The main three-story cell blocks Veer Savarkar’s cell (a must-see) The watchtower for panoramic views of the area Museum and galleries that display artifacts, letters, and stories The martyrs’ memorial and photo exhibition hall 🧭 Tips for Visitors Visit during daytime first to explore the museum and jail properly, then come back in the evening for the light & sound show. Wear comfortable shoes – there’s a lot of walking. Carry a bottle of water and a hat or cap, especially during summer. Photography is allowed in most areas, but not during the light and sound show. Buy tickets in advance (available at the entrance or online). 🌿 Overall Experience It’s not a fun or entertaining place — it’s a place of remembrance and reflection. You’ll leave with a sense of pride, respect, and emotion for the heroes who gave everything for India’s freedom. The silence inside the corridors speaks louder than words. If you’re in Port Blair, don’t miss this monument of courage and sacrifice — it’s a visit that stays in your heart forever.

🟥 1-Star Review – For Those Not Interested in History If you’re not someone who enjoys history or museums, Cellular Jail might feel like a waste of time. The place is mostly about old walls, cells, and long corridors — nothing much to “see” or “do.” The tour takes quite a while, especially if you wait for the light and sound show, which adds even more time. For someone just looking for fun or beautiful spots in the Andamans, this place feels dull, slow, and overly serious. You’ll spend a lot of time walking through empty cells and reading boards — which can get tiring and repetitive. There’s no interactive display or modern attraction to make it more engaging. Honestly, if you’re not into Indian freedom history, you may end up wondering why you even came here. Verdict: Overhyped, time-consuming, and boring if history doesn’t excite you. Rating: ⭐️ (1/5) Ticket: ₹30 — cheap, but not worth your time. ⸻ 🟩 5-Star Review – For History Lovers For those who love history and patriotism, Cellular Jail is an emotional and unforgettable experience. It’s not just a monument — it’s a powerful reminder of India’s struggle for freedom. Every corridor, every cell tells a story of pain, sacrifice, and courage. The ticket costs just ₹30, but the feeling you get walking through this historic site is priceless. The light and sound show in the evening beautifully narrates the jail’s story and the sufferings of freedom fighters — it’s deeply moving. Verdict: A must-visit for anyone who values history, heritage, and emotion.

A place that leaves you with a heavy heart but immense pride. The Cellular Jail, often called Kala Pani, is not just a monument—it's a silent witness to the unthinkable torture and sacrifice endured by our freedom fighters. Walking through those narrow corridors and tiny solitary cells, you feel the weight of history pressing upon you. What struck me deeply was the overwhelming number of Bengali and Punjabi freedom fighters imprisoned here—names that rarely get the recognition they deserve. Their stories are painful, heroic, and should be etched into every Indian’s memory. However, one aspect that left me disturbed was the casual attitude of many tourists. People were posing cheerfully in front of execution yards and prison cells, treating this solemn space like a picnic spot or film set. It's not a place for selfies and glamour shots—it's a place for reflection and respect. We desperately need more awareness and sensitivity. Visiting here isn’t just sightseeing—it's paying homage. Highly recommend everyone visit, but go with reverence in your heart.

The place that resonates with history & emotion. Visiting Cellular Jail in Port Blair was a powerful & unforgettable experience. It's the educational experience that every Indian should witness. It stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters during India's struggle for independence. The patriotism that fills the air here is memorable. The atmosphere of the jail is both somber & powerful. This place is a must-visit for anyone interested India's journey to freedom & to understand the struggles of India's freedom fighters.

The Cellular Jail is a poignant reminder of resilience and sacrifice, stirring both pride and sorrow , where brave souls were once imprisoned. It shows us about their tough life here & how they were tortured by the British. It's both haunting and inspiring. while passing though the walls, you can't help but feel the weight of the past. This colonial-era prison, built by the British, once housed Indian freedom fighters under harsh conditions. Every corner tells a story. I felt extreme sadness for the unimaginable British cruelty inflicted on freedom fighters. The jail of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar will give you goosebumps & also reminds you of the struggle which he went through. Here the punishment’s are unthinkable. I took photos of the punishment’s status too. Really horrible.

Well-maintained pathways & informative displays enhance the experience, though I strongly advise adding shaded sheds to shield visitors from the tropical heat. There's so much to look at in this place, including the way it is has been built.

I would recommend to be with a guide to connect with our history in a better way. Here the guides well-narrate the emotional, informative, and incredibly in the language you ask for. We opted for a guide who charged a nominal amount of Rs. 200 per family. It brings history to life in a way that connects with every generation. The ambiance, storytelling, and visuals are truly commendable.

The highlight of the visit was the light and sound show. The combination of vivid lights, evocative sound effects, and powerful storytelling brought history to life in an emotional and impactful way. It beautifully narrates the story of India's struggle for freedom, making you feel every moment. It's an emotional journey through the past.Photos and videos are not allowed during the light and sound show. This show should be pre booked in advance. This show is available in hindi & english language. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as there's a lot of walking involved. Best time to visit would be mornings or afternoons, to avoid the heat.

From here you can see the light house that is located in north bay island which is printed in ₹ 20/- old currency note of India.

This visit left me with a profound sense of respect and gratitude. The place is very well-maintained, with clean surroundings & informative displays that preserve its rich history with respect & care.
