Srisailam, located in the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana border, is a revered spiritual destination, primarily known for the Srisailam Temple dedicated to Lord Mallikarjuna (an incarnation of Lord Shiva) and Goddess Bhramaramba. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and a major pilgrimage site for devotees of Shiva. The temple complex is set amidst the scenic beauty of the Nallamala Hills, making it not only a religious center but also a peaceful retreat. The greatness of Srisailam lies in its rich history, spiritual significance, and the belief that it is one of the most sacred places for Hindus. It also holds immense mythological importance, as it is associated with various ancient stories, including those from the Mahabharata and the Puranas. The region is famous for its serene atmosphere, the sacred waters of the Krishna River, and the nearby Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary. Devotees visit to seek blessings, but many also come for the calming natural environment and the sense of divine tranquility it offers.

The Sri Bhramaramba Temple in Srisailam is the abode of Goddess Shakthi. Bhramaramba is one of the eighteen Shakti peethas. The Greeva (neck) of Devi fell here. She is the Shakti of Lord Mallikarjuna. The shrine of Lord Mallikarjuna is located in the midst of a pleasant locale situated on a flat top of Nallamalai Hills. Srisailam is one of the most ancient kshetras in India. It is on the banks of river Krishna on the right side in the district of Kurnoo, Andhra Pradesh. This revered mountain is also known as Sirigiri, Siridhan, Sriparvatha, Srigiri, and Srinagam. It has also been a popular centre of Saivite pilgrimage for centuries apart from being Sakthi peeta. Srisailam has remained one of the most important focal points in the Saivite worship journey. Sathavahanas, Ikshavakus, Pallavas, Vishnukundis, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Reddy Kings, Vijayanagara Emperors and Chatrapathi Shivaji are among the many that revered Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy. The extraordinary component of this kshetram is the combination of Jyothirlingam and Mahasakthi in one ground, which is rare. There is a typical faith in vogue that this Holy Kshetram exists from times immemorial. The relic and origin of God Mallikarjuna Swamy and Goddess Bhramaramba Devi is not known. The Mallikarjuna Linga is open to every single enthusiast and anyone can go into the sanctum sanctorum of Mallikarjuna, touch him and perform Abhishekam and Archana himself to recitation of Mantras by Archakas without standing or statement of faith or religion. This unmistakably uncovers that communist example of society began from this spot and it is still in presence. At this place the waterway Krishna moves through a profound restricted valley, give or take 100 meters wide and almost at a profundity of 1000 meters from the slope top. The stream flows 70 kms uphill to Srisailam and keeps on flowing in the same valley for 80 Km down stream until it reaches Nagarjunasagar. The stream that flows through the enchanting valley is fine looking and more charming as it reaches close to Srisailam. At this place it is known as Pathalaganaga. The stream takes two quick turns at Pathalaganga and makes an expansive stretch of high Plateau in every curve. On the right side of the steam is Srisailam and on the left there is Chandraguptanagara, currently destroyed which is mentioned in the Skandapurana a literary work dated back to twelfth to sixteenth hundreds years. In the conventional Hindu mythology, this Kshetram is recognized as the Kailasa on the earth and named as ILA - KAILASAM.

Other than its legendary relic, Srisailam is likewise having an ancient authentic vestige. Beginning from the Satavahanas who were the most punctual leaders of Andhradesa, the area around Srisailam shows up as a noticeable religious focus and it keeps on being so into the present times. There is a typical conviction is in vogue that this Holy Kshetram exists from time immemorial. The noticeable quality of this Divya Kshetram is highlighted by the way that while performing day by day ceremonies the devotees indicate spot and area of their presence with reference to Srisailam. The temple of God Mallikarjuna is arranged in the focal point of inward yard and countenances toward the east. This temple comprises of Mukhamandapa, Antarala and Garbhagriha. The Mukhamandapa is arranged toward the west of the Veerasiromandapa. It is an expounded shut lobby comprising of 16 columns. This mandapa is additionally named as Mahamandapa and was manufactured by the Vijayanagara lord, Harihararaya – II in the year 1405 AD. There are three passageway entryways with pillared yards on the east, south and north. All are these have designed entryways and secured by the silver ornamented sheets at present. The Mandpa is 41.2 feet long and 41.4 wide. “Bhramara” implies honey bee and goddess Bhramarambika is ( Parvati), the companion of God...

The word Bhramaramba means “Mother of Bees”. As per the legend, Goddess Bhramaramba has released thousands of bees with six legs to kill the demon Arunasura.

History of Bhramaramba Devi Temple, Srisailam

There are many legends associated with the Bhramaramba Devi Temple. As per the most popular legend, Arunasura, a demon, was an ardent devotees of Lord Brahma. Pleased with his unwavering dedication, Lord Brahma blessed him with the powers that he can not be killed by any two or four legged living being. After receiving the boon, Arunasura started causing problems to devas and saints. Because of his immense powers, devas couldn't defeat him. Owing this, they went to Goddess Durga and pleased her to protect them. As an answer to their request, Goddess Durga took the form of Bhramari or Bhramarambika and created thousands of six legged bees that killed the demon. Later Goddess stayed back in the form Bramarambika in Srisailam.

There is one more legend associated with Bhramaramba devi temple as it is one of the shakti peethas. According to the story of Shakti peeth, King Daksha, father of Goddess Sati, organized a yagna but did not invite Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati. In spite of this, Goddess Sati decided to attend her father’s yagna. However, grieved by the insults she and her husband Lord shiva had to face at the yagna, she jumped in the holy pyre. Angered by this, Lord Shiva killed King Daksha and destroyed the entire yagna. Later he carried the corpse of the devi and started his dance of destruction- Tandava. In order to stop tandava, Lord Vishnu intervened. He cut the corpse of devi through his divine Sudarshana Chakra; because of this different parts of the body fell on various locations. Each of the place where a part of the devi fell is considered as Shakti peetha. It is said that neck of devi fell here in Srisailam.

Bhramaramba Devi Temple Timings for darshan are from 4.30 AM to 10 PM. It is open on all days of the week. Although devotees visit this temple throughout the year, the best time to visit is during the festivals when it is filled with increased liveliness and enthusiasm of the devotees. Visit especially during the Navaratri and the Kumbham festival to experience the unmatched spiritual aura of the temple.

Bhramaramba Devi Temple is located behind the Sri Mallikarjuna Swami temple, which is a prominent landmark of Srisailam town. It can be reached easily by auto rickshaws...
