Legend has it that the lake was built by the Cholas in a day. The water in the lake was fit for drinking till the early 1990s. Since then it has become unfit for drinking due to industrial waste and sewage entering the waterbody. It has gradually become polluted. BTM Layout, an abbreviation of Byresandra, Tavarekere and Madiwala Layout is a locality in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Built by the Cholas in a period of one day, Madiwala Lake sustains a flourishing bird habitat and is a popular picnic spot in the city due to its tranquil locales. As this area connects three of the popular vicinities: Bannerghatta, Tavarekere and Madivala, it got its name from the initials of these three places; thus BTM Layout. Many visitors come to Madiwala for spending their weekends by the Madiwala lake which is a big tourist attraction here. Boating facility is available in this lake which is about 400 years old. There is also a children's park by the lake.18-Feb-2019 Madiwala means washerman in Kannada; the locality was named for the community of washermen and washerwomen that once resided in the area. What's the nearest metro station to Madiwala Lake in Bengaluru? The nearest metro station to Madiwala Lake in Bengaluru is Doddakallasandra. It's a 10 min walk away. It is a home to many migratory birds. The lake comes under the administration of Karnataka State Forest Department which carries out the routine maintenance of this lake. There is a children's park as well. The lake received a Rs 25 Crore grant in 2016 from the Lake Development Authority of Bangalore. The Madiwala lake sees a huge number of Spot-billed Pelican migration in the winter (November–December). These Spot-billed Pelicans live in groups. Their main food is fish. Pelicans take small flight across the lake for fishing. These migratory birds can also be sighted in Sri Lanka. They provide a great sight while landing. Bangalore is endearingly called as the “City of Lakes”, and rightly so as it has a number of lakes and ponds sprinkled all over the city. But one of the biggest one among them all is Madiwala Lake which is situated between NH7 Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Main Road. Built by the Cholas in a period of one day, Madiwala Lake sustains a flourishing bird habitat and is a popular picnic spot in the city due to its tranquil locales. Aside from taking a leisurely stroll ashore the serene lake, you can watch the several migratory birds that come here to migrate. In addition to that, boating is a popular activity at the lake. A lot of tourists and locals come here for a quiet picnic amidst enchanting natural surroundings. Besides, a lot of photographers visit the spot to capture mesmerising views and beauty of the lake. Boating at Madiwala Lake Boating is the most popular activity at the Madiwala Lake. The tourists can hire the boats from the Boat Club that are available for a duration of 30 minutes or 1 hour. Aside from having a pleasant and wonderful experience, you might also spot the fish swimming in the shallow waters. Bird Habitat at Madiwala Lake Although there are a lot of birds that can be spotted at the lake all through the year, the rare and the exotic ones can be found during the migratory season i.e. winter season- between the months of November and January. The most frequently spotted bird at the lake is the Spot- billed Pelican. A lot of photographers and avid bird watchers come here with binoculars to watch these birds catching their prey and flocking around. Other birds that can be found here include Egrets, the long legged Purple Swamp Hen, Black Kite, Indian Robin, Floating Pelican, White breasted Kingfisher, Sun Birds and more.

BTM Lake is a delightful place to visit! Whether you're with family, friends, or your significant other, it's a great spot for a pleasant evening out. The atmosphere is lively, especially in the evening when it gets a bit crowded. Although boating is an option, it wasn't available during my visit. If you fancy a boat ride, it's wise to check the status at the booking area. The cost is Rs 50 for 30 minutes, but confirming details is always a good idea. The park offers a children's play area, ample seating, and even a mud trail along some parts of the lake. Keep your eyes peeled for birds – if you're lucky, you might spot a few. The park opens at 6 am and starts closing around 6:15 pm. Parking is available inside, but it's temporarily closed for some reason. You'll need to park outside and take a short walk to the entrance. Inside, you'll find coffee and tea vendors, along with sellers offering delicious corn. The lake is surrounded by lots of trees, creating a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city. It's situated in a residential area, giving it a cozy, neighborhood feel. Don't forget to enjoy the cool breeze as you take in the surroundings. While there are toilets available, the condition might not be top-notch. Overall, BTM Lake is a lovely escape within the city!
