By Air The airport is 11 km from downtown. Taxis are available for Airport transfer. Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Air Deccan connects Chandigarh with New Delhi the National Capital. Chandigarh Tourism has well maintained Tourist Information Centre at the Airport.

By Train Chandigarh is linked with New Delhi, the National Capital by Rail. The Chandigarh Railway Station is 8 Kms from the city centre in Sector 17. The twice daily Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi and Himalayan Queen connects New Delhi and Chandigarh. Paschim Express connects the city to Mumbai, Sadbhavna to Lucknow, Kerala Sampark Kranti to Kerala and Chennai Express to Chennai.

The story of Nek Chand’s Rock Garden in Chandigarh, is a truly great (and unusual) story of how an underground hobby became perhaps the most celebrated and famous attraction in Chandigarh.

Being from the UK, I hadn’t heard of the Chandigarh Rock Garden before I traveling to India back in 2018. On that first trip to India we traveled all over the country, from Leh & Khardung La Pass in the Himalayas to Kerala and everywhere in between.

It was actually only by chance that we ended up spending a week in Chandigarh (a snow blizzard closed our route out of Leh, so we had to fly to Chandigarh). Once there, we were told about the rock garden, and decided to go and see it for ourselves!

Nek Chand’s Rock Garden was definitely our favourite thing to do in Chandigarh, it’s a lovely, arty place, but it was the story of Nek, and how his rock garden came to be, that really captured our imagination.

In this article I’m going to share the history of Nek Chand’s Chandigarh Rock Garden.

By Road Chandigarh is well connected by road and buses provide an important transport link. There are services from various states such as- Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, and Delhi. It is a gateway to Himachal Pradesh as one can reach hill stations like Kasauli, Chail, Shimla etc within in a few hours drive. The hill stations Kullu & Manali with Rohtang Glacier are accessible from Chandigarh. The Union Territory of Chandigarh is well served by an excellent network of roads. The National Highways No. 21 (Ambala-Kinnaur) and 22 (Chandigarh-Leh) are the chief road arteries linking Chandigarh with the rest of the country. The city is within motorable distance from a number of popular towns and pilgrimage centres. Buses of several State Road Transport Corporations connect Chandigarh with many cities and towns of neighbouring states. Buses may be air-conditioned, deluxe, semi-deluxe or ordinary. The Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) is located in Sector 17 (City Centre).

The city has a pre-historic past. The gently sloping plains on which modern Chandigarh exists, was in the ancient past, a wide lake ringed by a marsh. The fossil remains found at the site indicate a large variety of aquatic and amphibian life, which was supported by that environment. About 8000 years ago the area was also known to be a home to the Harappans.

Since the medieval through modern era, the area was part of the large and prosperous Punjab Province which was divided into East & West Punjab during partition of the country in 1947. The city was conceived not only to serve as the capital of East Punjab, but also to resettle thousands of refugees who had been uprooted from West Punjab.

In March, 1948, the Government of Punjab, in consultation with the Government of India, approved the area of the foothills of the Shivaliks as the site for the new capital. The location of the city site was a part of the erstwhile Ambala district as per the 1892-93 gazetteer of District Ambala. The foundation stone of the city was laid in 1952. Accessibility & Location: The garden is located near Sukhna Lake, making it easy to visit if you’re already in the vicinity. It’s well-connected by road, and there’s ample parking space for visitors. Entry fees are quite reasonable, making it accessible to most visitors.

Crowd & Atmosphere: The Rock Garden is a popular tourist attraction, so it can get crowded during weekends and holidays. However, due to the vast expanse of the garden, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded. The atmosphere is calm, and it’s easy to get lost in the beauty of the surroundings. It's especially peaceful on weekdays or early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

Visiting Rock Garden, Chandigarh had always been on my wishlist, and I was thrilled to finally explore this incredible place in March. The weather was absolutely perfect—neither too hot nor too cold, making it an ideal time to walk around and fully enjoy the experience.

The Rock Garden is a one-of-a-kind creation, designed by Nek Chand, who transformed discarded materials into breathtaking sculptures and structures. The park is filled with intricately crafted figures made from recycled materials such as broken tiles, glass pieces, ceramic plates, bangles, and various discarded items. The creativity and craftsmanship behind this garden are truly inspiring, turning what would have been waste into a spectacular work of art.

Maintenance Issues – Room for Improvement

While the Rock Garden is undoubtedly a unique and fascinating attraction, some areas could use better maintenance. Certain sections, particularly the water ponds and streams, were unclean and had a foul odor. This took away from the otherwise wonderful experience. Regular upkeep of these water features would significantly enhance the overall appeal of the garden.

Final Thoughts – A Must-Visit Spot in Chandigarh

Despite the minor maintenance concerns, the Rock Garden is absolutely worth a visit. The blend of art, creativity, nature, and fun attractions makes it a standout destination unlike anything else. It’s a true testament to human ingenuity—showcasing how discarded materials can be transformed into something magical.
