Our Lady of Merces (Mercy) Church in Colva, Goa is a magnificent Church built as a chapel in 1630. The Portuguese called this church as “Nossa Senhora das Merces Igreja em Colva, Goa” – literally meaning Our Lady of Mercy Church in Colva, Goa. This relatively small church has the Lady of Mercy in the central altar. It has the Infant Jesus (Menino Jesus in Portuguese) enshrined inside in whose honor they celebrate a grand festival. This embellished statue of the Infant Jesus was found in a shipwreck some time in 17th Century somewhere in Africa coast by Fr.Bento Feriera – a Jesuit Priest. The Infant Jesus is venerated with special devotion and on the feast day ‘Colva Fama’ thousands of pilgrims converge here to celebrate. The feast is celebrated on the second Monday of October every year. The interiors of the church are adorned with gold plated metal adornments and portraits of saints in the main aisle.
