Shakti-piths are very important and hold mythological importance for the Hindus. It is said that Lord Siva on realising about the self-immolation of his wife Sati Devi during Daksha’s (Sati Devi’s father) Yagna, he destroyed Daksha’s yajna in Virabhadra avatar and cut off the head of Daksha. Later he replaced it with the head of a goat before restoring his life. Then Lord Siva started the “Rudra Tandava”, the dance of destruction. This led to the destruction of the universe and the universe becoming standstill with no activities. Hence the Devas started praying lord Vishnu for help. Accordingly, Lord Vishnu appeared before Lord Siva and started fighting with Him. During this, Lord Vishnu had to use his Sudarshan chakra and cut of Sati Devi’s body in many parts. These parts landed in many parts on the earth. These places came to be known as the Shakti-piths. Gayatri Mandir in Dwarka is one such Sakthi-pith.
