Birla Planetarium The M. P. Birla Planetarium started functioning from September 29, 1962 as an educational, scientific and research institution and was formally inaugurated on July 2, 1963 by the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This was the second major Planetarium to be set up in the commonwealth countries with London having a Planetarium a few years earlier to the one in Calcutta then.

This was the first of its kind in India and the largest in Asia. Syt. M. P. Birla was the driving force behind this project. The Planetarium has been established on a land (about an acre) leased by the West Bengal Government. The Planetarium with all its assets had been transferred to the Registered Society of "Birla Institute of Fundamental Research".

The M. P. Birla Planetarium, since its inception, has designed and presented to the public and students more than 350 astronomical projects dealing with many facets of astronomy, astro-physics, Celestial Mechanics, Space Science, History of astronomy,Centenaries of famous Astronomers as well as mythology concerning stars and planets. The Planetarium has also been conducting a series of graded school programmes for children of various age groups. Almost from the very beginning of this institution, it has been conducting a Free Evening Course inAstronomy. स्थापत्य

बी.एम. बिडला सभागार का डिजाइन पारंपरिक राजस्थानी कला पर प्रकाश डालता है। यहां के फ्रेस्को में एक साथ क्लासिक पुरानी और समकालीन भारतीय वास्तुकला का मिश्रण है। यह राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय, वैज्ञानिक, औद्योगिक और सांस्कृतिक सम्मेलनों के आयोजन के लिए एक आदर्श वातावरण प्रदान करता है। मुख्य सभागार के अलावा कई सम्मेलन हॉल और संगोष्ठी कक्ष हैं जहां समानांतर सत्र और समूह चर्चाएं की जा सकती हैं। इसके अलावा छोटी बैठकों के लिए 40 से 400 व्यक्तियों के बैठने की क्षमता वाले कई हॉल हैं।

बिड़ला तारामंडल

एमपी बिड़ला तारामंडल शैक्षिक, वैज्ञानिक और अनुसंधान संस्थान के रूप में 29 सितंबर, 1962 से शुरू किया गया था और औपचारिक रूप से पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू द्वारा 2 जुलाई, 1963 को इस भव्य भवन का उद्घाटन किया गया। कहा जाता है कि जयपुर का यह तारामंडल लंदन और कोलकाता के तारामंडल के बाद सबसे भव्य तारामंडल है। यह भारत में अपनी तरह का पहला और एशिया में सबसे बड़ा तारामंडल था। इस परियोजना के पीछे एमपी बिडला की प्रेरणा शक्ति थी। तारामंडल एक एकड़ में फैला हुआ है। अपने सभी परिसंपत्तियों के साथ तारामंडल “बिरला इंस्टिट्यूट ऑफ फंडामेंटल रिसर्च सोसायटी’ द्वारा पंजीकृत किया गया है। एक साथ साढे तीन सौ लोगों को यह तारामंडल खगोलीय विज्ञान के कई पहलुओं, खगोल भौतिकी, खगोलीय यांत्रिकी, अंतरिक्ष विज्ञान, खगोल विज्ञान के इतिहास, प्रसिद्ध खगोलविदों के विचारों से अवगत कराने में सक्षम है। खास बात यह है कि छत पर गोलाकार पर्दे पर कथाओं के माध्यम से यहां तारों और ग्रहों के विषय की जानकारी दी जाती है। तारामंडल ST6 सीसीडी कैमरे के के साथ सेलेस्ट्रोन सी 14 टेलीस्कोप के...
