Read moreAs the name suggests, Birsa Munda - (Tribal Freedom Fighter, a Religious Leader & a Folk Hero who belonged to Munda Tribe) was an important personality from the Indian Freedom Struggle. Born on 15th November 1875 in Ulihatu in district Khunti, Jharkhand. The area was part of Bihar in British India.
He was referred to as 'Dharti Abba or Father of Earth' by his followers. In March 1900, while fighting the British alongside his guerilla army, Munda was arrested in Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur.
Birsa started a movement called 'Ulgulan', or 'The Great Tumult'. His struggle against the exploitation and discrimination against tribals led to a big hit against the British government in the form of the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act being passed in 1908.
Birsa Munda died in prison on June 9, 1900 barely at 25 years of age. According to sources, he was poisoned by the British authorities to curb the Ulgulan. With his death, the movement came to an end.
