Read moreSometime in 1998, Revered Swami Smaranananda ji Maharaj, the then General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission initiated a research into Swami Vivekananda’s stay in Belagavi. It was well known that Swamiji had stayed in Haripada Mitra’s house in Belagavi and that Haripada Mitra was a sub-divisional forest officer in 1892 and also that Swamiji had written letters to Haripada Mitra to his Belagavi address from America. But it was not know which particular house in Belagavi it was or even where in Belagavi that house was located!
After long of study it was ascertained categorically that Survey No.357, Mansingh Thapa Road, Fort, Belagavi – 590 016, was the blessed house of Sri Haripada Mitra where Swamiji had stayed for 9 days in Oct 1892.
Once this was confirmed, the State Govt handed this over to Ramakrishna Math and Mission.
After it was handed over, Revered Swami Purushottamanandaji Maharaj was asked to take charge of this centre. Revered Swamiji initiated a structural study of the building to ascertain which parts of the building were original construction and which were later additions. It was then decided to remove all the additions and restore the building to how it was during Swami Vivekananda’s stay in 1892. In Dec 2000, Reverd Swamiji shifted to a rented house in Belagavi and then renovation of the building was started. The work took six months since it had to be reinforced by tie-rods to keep the walls from falling apart.
The renovation was completed in six months time. Chief Minister Sri S.M. Krishna inaugurated it on 23rd May 2001. Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj laid the foundation stone for the inauguration of the Ashrama. Also in the same programme. Sri Dharam Singh, the then PWD minister, granted 0.9 acres of adjacent land for this...
Read moreBeing a Hubballi local, I love exploring new places. Yesterday (15/10/2025), I decided to ride my scooter… my trusty mate… to Belagavi to see what I could find. While roaming around, I came across Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama and thought I’d check it out. I visited around 4:30 PM and wanted to share my experience.
The ashram is tucked inside the Belagavi Fort area, and as soon as I stepped in, I felt a sense of calm. The gardens and pathways are neat, and the whole place feels peaceful and well cared for, a nice break from the city chaos.
It was really special knowing that Swami Vivekananda once stayed here. I spent some time in the small museum and library, which are simple but give a good insight into his life and teachings. Walking around and reading a few things felt meaningful. The monks and staff are humble and polite, and they keep the place well maintained.
The ashram is very well organized for visitors. There’s a separate footwear counter, a spot to wash your hands and legs, clean and well-maintained toilets, and even a drinking water facility. All these small details make the visit comfortable and convenient.
I didn’t stay for the evening prayers or bhajans, as I had to head back to Hubballi. But just walking around, exploring the museum, and soaking in the calm atmosphere was refreshing and uplifting.
Overall, it’s a clean, peaceful, and inspiring place. Spending some time here gave me a nice break and a chance to reflect. If you’re in Belagavi and looking for a quiet spot, this ashram is definitely worth...
