The temple was built in the 14th century by Zamorin of Calicut. Tali Kshetram is an ancient temple in the heart of Kozhikode town. Shiva is the presiding deity. The Jyothirlingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum is believed to have been installed by Parasuraman. The temple is one km to the east of Kozhikode railway station. It is surrounded by the Palayam market. This was the family temple of the Zamorins who had ruled Kozhikode. Although the temple is now under Malabar Devaswom, the Zamorin is the managing trustee. The temple is built in traditional Kerala architectural style. The two-storied sanctum-sanctorum is in the shape of a chariot. It is adorned with murals and granite sculptures of Shiva’s retinue. Inside Sree Kovil deities of Tali Ganapathy, Thevarathil Ganapathy and Thrumandhakunnu Bhagavathy are installed. Sree Krishna, Thevarathil Bhagavathy, Ayyappa, Sri Vishnu and Nagam are installed outside Shiva Temple. Sree Valayanad Bhagavati idol is installed inside Sree Krishna Temple. History Tali temple is one of the oldest temples in Kozhikode. The temple was built by Swamy Thirumulapad. The founding and prosperity of Kozhikode city is closely linked with the sanctity of this ancient temple. It is believed that the lingam in the sanctum of the Temple was installed towards the end of Dvapara Yuga by Sri. Parasurama. The posture in the sanctum is that of Umamaheswara. Though this divine power existed from time immemorial, the attention of the citizens of Kozhikode was (bestowed on the temple) only by about 1500 years ago. Later on the temple reached its zenith during the rule of the Zamorin of Calicut,(also known as Samoothiri)who had the prestigious title Sailabdheswara. The temple to its present state was built in the 14th century. The temple was almost damaged when Tipu Sultan invaded Kozhikode in the 18th century. Again the shrine was renovated in 1964. The Tali Temple situated in the heart of the Kozhikode Town, about one kilometer east of the Railway Station and a treasure house of historical memorable is under the Trusteeship of the Zamorin of Calicut.

The founding and prosperity of Kozhikode town is closely linked with the sanctity of this ancient temple. The Jyothirlingam in the sanctum – Sanctorum of the Temple was installed towards the end of Dwaparayuga by Sri. Parasurama, who was responsible for the creation of Kerala, by retrieving the land from the sea by throwing his powerful axe from the top of Sahyadri, The posture in the sanctum-sanctorum is that of Umamaheswara. Though this divine power existed from time immemorial, the attention of the citizens of Kozhikode was (bestowed on the temple) only by about 1500 years ago. It reached its zenith during the rule of the Zamorins, who had the prestigious title Sailabdheswara (The lord of the mountain and the sea).

This is one of the oldest temples in Kozhikode district. As per the available records this temple was installed towards the end of deaparayugam. The pratishta was done by “Parasuraman (Vishnu’s 8th avatharam). The main deities are Lord Shiva & Lord Krishna and also Narasimha Moorthy. Thevarathil Ganapathi, Baghavathi, Lord Ayyappa, Naga devatha/raja, erinjipuran are upadevathas.

The temple is managed by “Samoodiri” family and the administrative assistance are provided by Devaswom Board through their employees.

Since my wife’s ancestral house is near to this place, it was a daily visiting place for her and family. There is a lot of infrastructural developments done which gave a newer look to the surroundings. The temple pond is also secured by constructing suitable structures. Unlike earlier times, now you cannot see people taking bath in the temple pond.

For devotees they get a positive vibe soon after they reach around this old temple. There is daily poojas and the spiritual day start at 4:30 am and will close at intervals. It’s a nice scene to take part in Deeparadhana in the evening.

Udhayasthamana Pooja is one of the best offering and we have done it twice one in my name and in my daughters’ name. We are planning to do the same offering in wife’s name too. The best part of this offering is that you can be present for the complete pooja of one day from morning till evening. For a devotee that day will be very special as he/she along with their family can be present in the temple for a full day getting the positive vibes!!

If you are a devotee of Lord Shiva or Lord Krishna please visit and...

the temple stands at the heart of Kozhikode near the Palayam market and is only about 1 km from the railway station. It is the historic family temple of the Zamorins and remains under their trusteeship, managed today by the Malabar Devaswom Board. Timings: 4:30 AM–11:00 AM and 5:00 PM–8:30 PM daily . Entry: Free; traditional dress code enforced—men should wear veshti/mundu without shirts; western attire is not permitted (rentals available onsite) Recently renovated under the Tali Heritage Project, the pond now features eight artistic relief murals on its eastern wall, illustrating the history and culture of the Zamorins—from coronation rituals to scholarly traditions like Revathi Pattathanam . The area includes granite ghats, bleacher-style seating, aesthetic lighting, and landscaped surroundings that invite relaxation and reflection . A favorite local hangout and meditation space—often praised simply as “peaceful” and “rejuvenating,” with clean surroundings and a tranquil vibe. Best time to visit Evening for ambiance and lighting; cooler months (Nov–Feb) are ideal .
