My first day in Shillong started with a visit to the Museum, and it turned out to be a beautiful experience. There was almost no crowd—just one lady at the entrance giving tickets . Since no one else was around, I explored the entire museum alone, which made it even more peaceful and personal.

The place isn't very big, but it's very well-maintained and thoughtfully arranged. You get to see a lot about the local lifestyle—traditional clothing, dressing sense, musical instruments, coins, flowers, and even geographical maps. It’s a wonderful glimpse into the culture and heritage of the region.

If you're in Shillong and interested in local history and culture, this museum is definitely worth a visit. It may be small, but it offers a rich and...

The museum is situated in the same campus as the Soso Tham Auditorium. A new building has been added to the already existing state museum. The new building houses added information about the state of Meghalaya. The museum has exhibits to showcase art and culture of all the prominent ethnic tribes in Meghalaya. It has separate rooms for philately, riding of the hill state and people's struggle to achieve statehood. Also on display are paintings of famous artists of the state. It has a time vault to be opened only in the Centennial year of statehood, 2072. There is a souvenir shop and a cafe upstairs. Must visit if you are inclined to find out about the state...

Location: East Khasi Hills District, Shillong

For those interested in ethnic tribal culture and tradition this Govt. Museum under the control of Art and Culture Department offers insights to the lifestyle of the people. This museum is in the State Central Library complex where monuments for the great patriots of the state had been erected besides the statue of Smt. Indira Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

It is considered as one of the centre for studies into our history and culture as well as for preserving our rich cultural heritage that is now undergoing tremendous pressure in the face of contacts with various cultures both from the East...

Beautiful display of North Eastern culture. A highly fascinating depiction of the history, celebrations, jobs, village life, and traditional clothing. The location is manageable for a quick visit at any time because it is not overly large. There is typically no rush here. There is a strong collection of tribal and local culture here. There is a separate area for each of the following: apparel, art, and musical instruments. Increasing the collection would aid in promoting this institution.

●The place is falling apart and badly maintained. Half the lights do not work and it's very dark inside. ●The majority of items like dolls and paintings are recently made. The setup should more aptly be called an art gallery instead of a museum. ●Extra charges for photography, yes even a small digital camera. ●The weapons and musical instruments section is the only saving grace. Overall time required maybe 15min. I suggest you skip it entirely and don't come.
