One of the most visited rituals place of South Mumbai situated at walkeshwa near the sea. Nearest railway station is churney Road, you can take cab from here 15 min. Or take bus. Often called Mini Banaras of Mumbai. According to Hindu mythology when Lord Ram on his way to Lanka, he pray here to Lord Shiva to help him find his wife Sita who had kidnapped by King Ravana. To do so he created Shivling from sand which is known as Valuka Ishwar, then it pronounced as walkeshwar. On that time when Lord Ram thirsty and tired, asked his brother Laxman for drinking water, he slot arrow into the ground, which resulted in spurt of fresh water. It was believed that this water came from tributary of Ganga, hence the place was knwon as Banganga. Many temples are surrounded with seating pandit for pinddan and shradh. Every 1st Saturday of new year there is classical program festival organised by BMC authority which is must to see by book tickets. Nearest place to visit are kamla Nehru park, Marin Drive sea, hanging garden, babulnath temple.

Banganga Tank in Walkeshwar, Mumbai, is a historical and mythological landmark dating back to the Silhara dynasty. According to legend, Lord Rama, during his exile, struck the ground with his bow, and a fresh water spring emerged, forming the sacred Banganga. The tank is believed to be connected to the Ganges, making it a significant pilgrimage site. Surrounded by ancient temples and heritage structures, Banganga offers a glimpse into Mumbai’s spiritual past. The Walkeshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands nearby, adding to the site’s religious significance. Despite its historical value, the area needs better maintenance and cleanliness. A visit to Banganga during special religious events provides a deeply spiritual experience, as the site is still used for rituals and holy dips. History enthusiasts and devotees alike will appreciate the serene atmosphere and cultural richness of this hidden gem in South Mumbai.

A really good place to sneak peek at the busiest life and hustle bustle of Mumbai City, exactly within the city. One can simply get bus/cab from Grant road (West) Gaondevi busstop, any bus going to Kamla Nehru park will halt at Walkeshwar. It's just 5 minutes away from Walkeshwar bus stop. Even in this small walk one can witness beautiful old Bombay buildings parralel to modern tech savvy towers. Old rock cut headquarters of Bombay Rajbhavan is exactly behind the bus stop. The Banganga tank is surrounded by locals who are usually Brahmin- who perform Pooja and do Pooja on others behalf. Others stay with their family. Around the whole Bangana Tank 10-15 familes can be seen staying. The whole Bangana is completely covered with different scenes and it's completely away from usual clamour of city. It has beutiful and different temples. Temples are well maintained and must visit for anyone.

The Banganga Tank is a temple tank which is part of the Hindu Walkeshwar Temple complex in the Malabar Hill area of the city of Mumbai, India. The tank was built in AD 1127 by Lakshman Prabhu, a minister in the court of Silhara kings of Thane.

It was rebuilt in 1715, funded by a donation from Rama Kamath. The main temple has since been reconstructed and is now a reinforced concrete structure of recent construction.

The tank today is a rectangular pool structure surrounded by steps on all four sides. At the entrance are two pillars in which diyas (oil lamps) were lit in ancient times.

The tank, as well as the main Walkeshwar Temple and the Parshuram Temple, belong to the Goud Saraswat Temple Trust, which once owned most of the property in the complex. Many Goud Saraswat Brahmin families (Rege, Anaokar, Mulgaonkar, Kenkre, Sakhardande, Sukthankar, Keni, Marudkar, Naik, Wartikar, Warerkar, Bidikar, Bhende, Prabhawalkar, Pagnis) still reside in the Temple Trust buildings in the complex.

The tank is spring-fed; thus its water remains sweet, despite being located only a few dozen meters away from the sea.

Apart from being a cultural hub, the place over the years has provided inspiration to many artists, be it on film...
