Mahim Fort, located in the Mahim area of Mumbai, is one of the lesser-known historical sites in the city. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it originally served as a strategic military outpost. However, over time, the fort fell into disrepair and now exists in a somewhat dilapidated state, making it less of a tourist attraction compared to other forts in Mumbai like Gateway of India or Bandra Fort. ### Key Aspects: 1. **Historical Significance**: The fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1680 to defend the area from the Marathas. It was later taken over by the British in the 18th century. It’s interesting from a historical standpoint, though not much of the original structure remains intact. 2. **Location**: Mahim Fort is located near the Mahim Beach, which is a busy part of Mumbai. The fort itself is tucked away in a residential area, which means it’s not a prominent tourist spot and can sometimes be overlooked. 3. **Condition**: The fort is in poor condition and lacks proper maintenance. Most of the fort’s structure is reduced to ruins, and it’s surrounded by modern buildings. It doesn't offer the same panoramic views or grandeur as other forts, which can make it less appealing to those looking for a more scenic or fully preserved historical experience. 4. **Accessibility**: The fort is accessible to the public, but you’ll likely need to search for it amidst local streets and residential buildings. It’s not as well-marked as other historical sites in Mumbai, so visiting may require a little bit of patience and exploration. 5. **Cultural Context**: While the fort itself may not be a major draw for tourists, the area around it offers a glimpse into the local life of Mumbai, with its mix of residential homes and bustling markets. It’s a good place to experience the contrast between Mumbai's rich history and its modern-day hustle and bustle. ### Overall Review: Mahim Fort can be an interesting visit for history buffs or those looking to explore off-the-beaten-path locations in Mumbai. However, if you're expecting a well-preserved, tourist-friendly fort, you might be disappointed. It's a quiet spot, perfect for those looking for a peaceful break from the busy city, but it's not a must-see if you're short on time. Mahim Fort is the oldest fort in Mumbai. Connecting the east-west coasts of Mumbai and guarding the bay of Mahim, this fort was known as the gatekeeper of the waterway. At the mouth of the Mahikavati aka Mahim bay, which separates the islands of Mumbai from the mainland, Pratap Bimba Raja built the Mahim fort in 1140 AD and established his capital there. And by calling people doing various types of business, trade, enterprise, science And the seeds of culture were planted on the island of Mumbai. After the fort came under the control of the British, the English architect Jerrold Augier rebuilt the existing fort. In 1672 AD, the Portuguese attacked the fort of Mahim. At that time the fort was equipped with 100 soldiers and 30 guns; So the Portuguese could not conquer it. Then on 14 February 1689 Siddhi Yakut Khan of Janjira attacked Mumbai with 2500 soldiers. At that time, after conquering the fort of Mahim, he ravaged the area for a year, looting Protected by strong fortifications and bastions on all sides, the entrance of this fort stands as a testimony of British architecture. The crafts on it and the raised pillars on both sides can be seen. Due to encroachment in the fort, nothing else can be seen. Mahim fort on the sea can be reached in 10 minutes if you get off at Mahim (West) station on the Western Railway and walk towards Mahim beach along Mori Road.

I saw Awful condition of Mahim Fort now. The bitter truth is it's not considered as Fort rather it's known as Mahim Fort Society. People had created their residence around Fort in such a way that no one came to know that there was existence of any Fort. I don't know is it legal or Illegal. Somewhere we are loosing our Heritage. You can see walls of Fort from Sea side but from city no one can know whether we have such Fort in this locality. I think we should take some measures to prevent our such Heritage.

As per its ancient history Mahim fort must be rated in 5stars.. but lukng at its present condition am giving it 2 stars.. Request to our Government to empty the illegal crowd in Mahim Fort .. As they r building room on room in the fort which is our ancient heritage. Shock to see such people migrating in fort. What were the government officials doing wen this crowd migrated in the fort for residence.. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡.. This was my review few years back but I am glad to tell everyone that Mahim fort has been made vacant and it has been declared by the government as a heritage and all required steps have been taken to empty the fort.. Thanks to the Indian Government...
