Masjid Khairuddin — Attraction in Punjab

Built in AH 1294 (AD 1877) by a wealthy Kashmiri Muslim merchant named Muhammad Khairuddin, this mosque holds historical significance. Before the Partition of 1947, just as there was a significant Hindu and Sikh population in Lahore, Muslims also made up a considerable portion of Amritsar’s population—nearly 47 per cent, according to the 1941 Census.

After the Dogra rule began in the Jammu and Kashmir region, many Kashmiri Muslims, including affluent merchants, migrated to Punjab (including Amritsar) due to increasing corruption under the Dogra rulers. This mosque was built by one such Kashmiri Muslim whose family had migrated to the region during that time.

When the infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre occurred, many Muslims were also part of the gathering and were among those killed in the firing ordered by the British. It is said that following the massacre, several dead bodies were brought to the courtyard of this mosque. In response, the mosque’s Imam, Tooti-e-Hind Shah Ataullah Bukhari, appealed to the people—regardless of their religion, whether Sikh, Hindu, or Muslim—to unite and rise against British rule.
