Lakshmi Kund is one of the famous ancient Kund (pond) of Varanasi. The word Lakshmi is the name of Holy Goddess of prosperity and wealth. This Kund is adjacent to ancient shrin of Goddess Lakshmi famous as Mahalakshmi Temple. A sixteen day fair is organised here in the Ashwin month of Hindu Calender, which is known as Surahiya Ka Mela. People from all walks of society come to worship Goddess Lakshmi here.
Kund is Beautiful but lacks cleanliness which is impossible without the awareness of localities and visitors. You can spot ducks and some other birds. There are some very beautiful wall paintings and art as well. At night, colourful fountains make the place even more amazing. But now lamp posts are in bad condition. Fountains too. The water tank and the surrounding area are in a deplorable state. There is rubbish around the entrances to the kund. All sorts of things have been dumped into the water and people were dumping leftovers of rituals, including oils, lamps flowers and other offerings while I was there.
