Right from the time we decided to visit the Shri Ram Lalla Mandir at Ayodhya, we also planned to explore other historical temples in the city. During our visit to a Shiv Mandir, someone mentioned that the renowned Shri Kaleram Mandir was located right next door. Curious and excited, we went to see it—and what a rewarding experience it was!
We were fortunate to meet Shri Deshpande, a former Postmaster of Ayodhya and a member of the Sevayat family that has been associated with the temple for the past 300 years. He narrated the fascinating history of the temple with great passion and detail. He explained how, during the rule of Aurangzeb and the threat of temple destruction, the original idols were immersed in the river Sharayu for safekeeping. These idols were later discovered by Mr. Moghe, a Maharashtrian resident of Ayodhya, nearly 300 years ago. He established them in the present temple, which was eventually named Shri Kaleram Mandir. The idols, beautifully carved out of black stone, are a striking sight.
