The ashram is located at a convenient distance of a kilometre from the Kausani bus stand. Gandhiji spent a number of days here in 1929 and a lot of people come to this place following in his footsteps. Local legend proudly suggests that Gandhiji was so besotted by the natural beauty of the place that he exclaimed that this was truly the Switzerland of India. He is believed to have been working on his theory of Anasakti Yoga, which preaches the belief in the philosophy of non-attachment to the material world. There is a small prayer room in the ashram, where prayers are held every morning and evening. Much like in the rest of the Kumaon region, sublime views of the Himalayas are abundant and omnipresent. The quietude and serenity of the spot is disturbed by little else and heightened by the locally popular reading library. It is also the birthplace of poet Sumitranandan Pant, as well as surrounding tea gardens and ancient temples.
In the year 1929, when Pujya Bapu Mahatma Gandhi went on a tour of India Then came here for a two-day rest in the guest house of a tea garden owner with the aim of removing his fatigue.
But after coming here, he was so mesmerized to see the golden rays of the sun falling on the snow-capped mountains on the other side of Kausani. Forgetting his stay of two days, he stayed here for fourteen consecutive days.
During his stay, he completed the preliminary stage of the composition of his famous book 'Anasakti Yoga' based on the Gita.
The guest house in the tea garden, which was the resting place of Mahatma Gandhi, later became the Dak Bungalow of the Zilla Panchayat. And by the then Chief Minister of undivided Uttar Pradesh, Honorable Sucheta Kriplani, it was given to 'Uttar Pradesh Gandhi Memorial Fund' to keep Gandhi's memory fresh.
