Thiruvanmiyur is identified with Sri Marundeeswarar Temple and it is a landmark in South Chennai. Here Lord Siva with his consort Parvati bless the devotees throughout the year. The Lord is known by the names Sri Marundeeswarar and Palvannanathar and the goddess is known by Sri Tirupurasundari. This Hindu Temple is more than 700 years old like Thegaraja Temple, Tiruvottriyur, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore and Sri Parthasarathi Temple, Tiruvallikeni. The Lord is in Linga swaroopam facing West. Those who pray the Lord Marundeeswarar here and get his Vibhudi, the sacred ash, are blessed and cured from diseases and hence the name Marundu(medicine)+ Eswarar( Lord Siva). It's so powerful. The Goddess Tirupurasundari is always decorated beautifully and it is a pleasure and blessed to have her darshan. Abhishekam and Poojas are done everyday as per Saiva rituals. Though all days are good and auspicious days to pray, Tuesdays and Fridays are special while Pradosham days are considered very auspicious when the Lord with consort after milk abhishekam and decoration bless the crowd of devotees. On these days the Lord come out on prakaram and give darshan. There are separate sannidhis for Lord Ganesa and Lord Subramanya outside. You can find Bhairava, Lord Vishnu, Nataraja, Dakshinamurthy while going round the sannadhi of Marundeeswarar with 63 Nayanmars (Saiva devotees).. This is one of the Siva temple without Navagraha sannidhi. The temple is maintained beautifully and you can find vast tank outside the temple on Eastern side. Dwajasthambam is on Western side, which is ECR. You can get prasadams at specified timings in Temple and from temple distribution stall on a nominal cost, items like Puliyodarai, which is very tasty, sweet Pongal, thattai, murukku, laddu, adhirasam etc. Hindu religious discourses are conducted by famous people in the evenings. There is Gosala( Pasu madam) for Cows. The temple is famous for festivals throughout the year and hence it wears a festive look all throughout the year. Pradosham and Maha Sivarathri days are very important days. The Lord with his consort come out on streets to bless the devotees. The float festival (this year on 21st March, 2019) and Chariot are very famous.(March) The temple is very big, spacious, clean and neat. Those who come here would find that they attain peace and free from pressing problems. Such is the serenity of this magnificient temple and presence of the Gods. You can relax and pray sitting at the vast clean space. There are lot of shops selling pooja items on the eastern entrance and you can get these, wash your legs and hands, buy pooja tickets at a small fee and do archana to the Gods. Do keep the Vibudhi and Kumkum for use at the house. The temple is maintained by HRCE, Tamilnadu, and is very near to Thiruvanmiyur Bus stand and and at the start of ECR. It is easily identified by huge Tower (Gopuram) from East as well as West Entrances. Whether you are a visitor to Chennai or local residence, this temple is a must visit place. Do visit the temple with family and get unlimited blessings of Lord Marundeeswarar and Sri Tirupurasundari. Divine atmosphere is prevalent everywhere not just in Sanctum sanctorum but throughout the complex. Chanting of Om Nama Sivaya echoes in every heart and temple corridors. Now it is being planned to do Kumbhabhishekam of the temple was done in a grand manner on February 5th this year (2020) in strict Agama way with chanting of vedic hymns and homams for 5 days culminating in Consecration ceremony. This 1300 years old temple is situated in Thiruvanmiyur near the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Marundeeswarar Temple has found its place in the verses of the well known Nayanars namely Appar and Thirugnana Sambandar during the 7th and 8th century.

Major expansion of the sacred complex was done during the Chola period in the 11th century. Other additions were made during the Vijayanagar Empire. Spanning over an area of 1 acre, the religious site is maintained by the Hindus Religious and Charitable Endowments department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Legends state that well known sage Valmiki who wrote the Ramayana had been worshipping Lord Shiva in this temple as such the place is also called Thiruvalmikiyur which was later renamed as Thiruvanmiyur. Opposite to this sacred shrine, a temple was built in honour of Valmiki.

It is believed that Sage Bharadwaja offered prayers to the Lingam in this sacred place. Markandeyar performed penance and worshipped Lord Shiva at this auspicious place. Lord Brahma had organised a festival in honour of Lord Shiva at this holy place.

People believe that Kamadhenu, the sacred cow performed ablution on the Lingam with milk as such the Lingam is also known as Palvananathar. As it poured milk on the Lingam, it appears to be white in colour. In Tamil the word Palvannam means white as milk as such the name Palvananathar. It is said that the main shrine faces west and Sun and Moon offer their prayers to the Lord daily during the sunset.

Vani tree is the holy tree of the temple where Lord Shiva made his appearance before Sage Valmiki and Sage Agastya. Last Kumbhabhishekam was held on 23rd May 2008. It is the 25th temple in Thondai region praised in the Thevaram hymns.

As Lord Shiva taught Sage Agasthya about the Oushadha Mooligai or medicinal herbs and the cure for various diseases he is known as Marundeeswarar. In Tamil the word Marundhu means medicine and Eswarar means God

Six rituals are held daily and twelve festivals are celebrated annually. Sessions on Shiva Siddhanta are held daily from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the Devasriyan mandapam. Brahmotsavam celebrated in the month of March to April attracts a huge crowd. Shivaratri, Ganesh Chaturthi and Skanda Sashti are also well celebrated in the temple. The temple has two entrances, one from East Coast Road and the other from West Tank Street both adorned by 5-tiered gopuram (gateway tower). The Entrance from the West Tank Street has got three gates whereas the entrance from the East Coast Road has only one gate. The temple is facing west with Dwajasthambam, Palipeedam and Nandhi. The temple occupies an area of about 1 acre - numerous images adorn the pillars of the temple, while stucco figures adorn the gopurams. The Samadhi of Sri Pamban Swamigal is about 0.5 Km from this temple.

Recognizing the penance of Sage Vasishta on Lord Shiva, Indira sent his Kamadenu the divine cow with the sage. Once, the cow delayed to pour the milk for pooja. The angry sage cursed it to become an ordinary cow losing its divine status..

He also suggested the cow to go to this place and worship Lord Shiva under the Vanni tree to recover its divinity. Kamadenu poured the milk on the Lord and got back its original supremacy.

Hence, the Lord has the name Paalvanna Nather. Paal in Tamil means milk. When Sage Valmiki came there to worship Lord Shiva, Kamadhenu ran in fear pressing its feet on the head of the Shivalinga, the scar of which is still visible on the presiding deity..

The road starting from Marundeeswarar temple, now called ECR was an important route during the Chola period and was known as Vadagaperuvazhi, connecting the kingdom to places in Thanjavur and Andhra Pradesh. Inscriptions can be found in the shrine of Tripurasundari Amman dating back to the 11th century during the period of Rajendra Chola.3 The origins and antiquity of this temple is corroborated by the inscriptions found in other temples in the city namely Kapaleeswarar Temple, Virupaksheeswarar Temple and Thiruvidandai which bear testimony to Tiruvanmiyur's existence.
