Taman Hewan Pematang Siantar -THPS — Attraction in City of Pematang Siantar

I was extremely unimpressed with my visit to this zoo. I wish I never went.

There are so many large animals at this zoo, and their enclosures are FAR too small.

The tigers were imprisoned in cages around only four or five times their size - that's barely enough room for a tiger to walk, let alone run. The Siberian tiger was pacing back and forth in its cage, just to prove how depressed this animal must have felt.

A bunch of children stood around in amazement at the lion who began to roar, and didn't stop until we left. I don't know much about lion behaviour, but I feel as if that isn't something happy lions commonly do.

The icon of Sumatra - the endangered Sumatran tiger was crammed into one of these small cages as well. None of these animals deserve such cruel treatment, but I was especially surprised by this one. How is this harsh treatment allowed, especially towards endangered animals?

This zoo needs to seriously change their practices - it's better to have a few animals that are treated well than hundreds that will live the rest of their life in a prison. There is a large area within the zoo dedicated to a children's playground that I didn't even see one child use while I was there - why not expand the enclosures into this area?

After spending weeks in the jungle of Sumatra (and seeing how those especially in Bukit Lawang seem to care so much for the well being of their animals) I was disappointed to see such different treatment within the city. This cruel treatment was not the view I had of Sumatra previously - please, for the sake of these animals, expand their enclosures, don't overcrowd them, and give them a better...

I have never had a good expectation for a local zoo but Bali Zoo. But, this place has changed my mind. Eventhough there was no giraffe, but Happily, I saw more animals even the rare ones. They seemed healthy and maintained well. Located at the heart of Siantar City, around 2-3 hrs driving from Medan, North Sumatera, Indonesia. My kids were happy and we have learnt a lot. A little suggestion for this zoo are around the bin and the Wahana. As many people came and had food or snacks, they need to easliy find the bin otherwise more visitor would throw dirty things everywhere. Salah 1 taman hewan tertua di Indonesia, lumayan lengkap jenis fauna dan semakin tertata lebih baik 10x lipat daripada 30 tahun lalu (saya lahir dan besar tidak jauh dr lokasi ini, jd dr kecil sudah biasa bermain disini). Pintu masuk dan keluar sangat baik, walaupun saya lihat kamaren saat berkunjung dgn keluarga, pintu pagar ke arah gang kampung timbang galung terbuka dan ada orang keluar masuk tanpa penjagaan, sedikit mengkhawatirkan. Sistem ticketing ok, perlu ada masukan dr saya akan lebih baik ada petugas menjaga antrian atau dipasang tali/pembatas antrian mengingat masyarakat kita sedikit terbiasa menerobos antrian seperti yang saya alami saat itu, yg kemudian saya tegur orangnya agar tertib antri. Penataan tata ruang nya sudah ok, tanda penunjuk arah juga ok, tempat sampah mungkin perlu di tinjau jangan ada spot kosong terlalu jauh mengingat masyarakat kita Indonesia bukan tipikal yg sadar buang sampah pada tempatnya, terutama di bagian hiburan anak di seberang jalan. Disini juga wahana nya lumayan lengkap untuk ukuran kota kecil seperti siantar, namun ada beberapa yang tidak beroperasi saat itu nampaknya karena rusak karena termakan usia. Dan yang lain seperti komedi putar dan helikopter pusing masih berjalan namun terlihat maaf sudah tidak layak pakai.disini juga saya lihat sungai yang melintasi taman hewan banyak sampah dan kotor. Kandang kandang hewan terlihat lebih seperti penjara daripada taman, lantainya di semen, yang seharusnya campuran pohon, semak, tanah, pasir dan batu sehingga terlihat seperti habitat alam nya, saya kasihan lihat singa dan harimau, mereka bahkan tidak terlihat bergairah hidup, dan juga kandang kandang hewan lainnya yang lantainya disemen dan tanpa tumbuhan didalamnya. Hiburan anak sperti Flying fox dan kolam renang sangat baik. Kandang orang utan atau mawas siantarnya sangat alami, sangat baik. Seperti inilah kandang yang tepat untuk setiap hewan, tidak harus besar ukurannya, serasa hewan itu berada di hutan. Btw, saat ini sudah sangat menghibur masyarakat siantar sekitarnya. Adapun masukan dan saran ini agar semakin lebih baik dimasa masa mendatang, dan kami akan semakin bangga dengan kebun binatang ini....
