I visited Museum Macan with a friend yesterday, we did have fun in the ways that we supposed not intended to do. By lollygagging around the museum (we still kinda do it in a respectful manner, we still play by the rules, but still). Ok, now on to the review.
I am an artist, however i am still new in understanding the art of yayoi kusama, but the visit to this museum is under-whelming. I am disappointed that i cannot bring my camera, but i sighed and might think it's just precautions measures.
We come early during the 1200-1400 quota hour. And we each paid 90-100k for this. This is heavily expensive for an exhibition for a singular artist, i wouldnt be complaining much if we have enjoyable time there besides us snickering solemnly at ourselves.
We were quickly asked to store our bags, we didnt carry a very large bags, just small knapsacks that is around the size of our head, probably less as it didnt have much items on then. This cause problems later. I understood that we are required to store large items. However aside of the wight and height dimensions, our bags was basically pretty thin with barely any depths and wont disrupt the artwork anyways. But we store it regardless.
Secondly, the staffs. Not all of them are particularly rude, but some irks us more than the other. We were rejected twice by the ticket checker because we were not on the right time slot, however the security has let us in ! And many people have get in before us and all of them were from the same time slot as us as well (the security guard even scolded the ticket master and let us through the queuing line after.)
We were basking on the glorious art form and went into a black yellow room full of black dots, it is great, and we decided to tale pictures, we did follow the rules, we aint touching the walls, however our hands were full. We put our items below ground to take an obligatory millenial picture, of course as my friend and I want to take a full body picture, we do realize that we need to be careful. So we put our small booklets on the floor and ...
"Maaf mbak ga boleh taroh barang di lantainya"
What in the world. Have just happened. Ok, I understood well that we must not damage the art but the thing is, you walk ON the artwork, you put your feet on the floor, it's a thing that we should so in this exhibition, you let us in. You. Step. On. It. And you said i cannot put your harmless paper booklet on the floor. I think it was the yellow black one that you were allowed to walk around, inside the exhibit. If you are so serious about it, why dont let us bring our small knapsacks. It's not a gym bag or a bagpack, what gives,?
I took my booklet, checking if there's any damage caused by a museum paper booklet and left. At this point my friend and i took a breathen and look at ourselves "let's joke on how ridiculous this thing that happened with us earlier"
As we get to the end of our escapade,we really unable to take the art serious because of the lingering staffs. We then went to the room with the stickers and as we heard that we cannot take the stickers home and our time is up, we decided to, not give a glance and finish our stickers and being the last to come out.
I really do want to enjoy the art more. I really do, after i went home, i decided to do more research of yayoi kusama and it was more to see than the ones exhibited here. They didnt focus on the art. They focused more on how the museum business operate by limiting our experience with rules that is even counterproductive. Museum staffs are pretentious, rude, and uneducated about the artwork, as it is hard for my friend and I to understand the artwork and only realized the depths of the art after i read articles and watch videos
I would not return, too pricey and overhype, however i would not discouraged those who are really REALLY enthusiastic and understand the levels of the art. As for me, it might be long for me to be on the learning curve and to PAY as much to experience the arts. Have you all heard of the national...

Shooting can only use a mobile camera and is prohibited from using flash / flash. Some exhibition points are prohibited for taking pictures. For backpacks and large bags it is forbidden to be brought in so they must be deposited in the storage room. Bags that are allowed to enter are also still being checked because they are prohibited from bringing food or drinks into the showroom. Walking must be slow and may not be noisy / noisy. It should not be too close to the exhibition panel let alone touch it. You can't lean against the wall. Every corner and edge of the show line, there are security officers and exhibition employees who are quick to reprimand if there are visitors who violate the provisions of the showroom.
So besides enjoying the exhibition, visitors should always maintain self-control so as not to violate the provisions and not be reprimanded nor expelled from the exhibition...
