The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Surabaya is one of the Dutch Catholic Church heritage buildings built in the 1920s. The second oldest church in Surabaya is quite special because it is the Cathedral Church, which became the residence of the Bishop of Surabaya which oversees Western region of East Java. Built in 1920s and maintained the authenticity of the building. Inside the church we can see some relics of the church and the Bishop of Surabaya, which is stored in display cabinets.
The design of the church was carried out by the Ed Cypress Bureau, where the floor plan has a rectangular shape. Meanwhile, the construction of the basilica was carried out by an architectural firm, namely Huswit-Fermont. The construction of the church cost 216,000 Dutch Guilders. The church's groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 11, 1920 by Father Fleerakkers, SJ . The inauguration and blessing of the church was held on July 21, 1921 by Mgr. Edmundus Luypen , SJ (Apostolic Vicar of Batavia) and this church was named the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Surabaya.
