FORMER U.S. The former U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran is now a museum called the "U.S. Den of Espionage Museum". The embassy was seized by students on November 4, 1979 to protest the Carter administration's decision to allow the former shah to receive medical treatment in the United States. The students held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days, and the Iranian Revolution in 1979 severed diplomatic relations between the two countries. The embassy was off-limits to visitors for almost 40 years, but is now open to visitors with tickets. The museum features many computers and typewriters from the 1970s, as well as devices and instruments used for surveillance and spying. There are also newspaper clippings about the hostage crisis, the overthrow of Shah, and Ayatollah Ali Khomeini's return from France. The museum's hallways branch into many rooms, and the tables are still in the same positions they were in the 1970s. Outside the museum, there is a bronze model of the Statue of Liberty on one side and a statue of one of the hostages on the other. The anniversary of the embassy takeover is commemorated every year in Tehran with a parade, speeches, and burning in effigy of U.S. leaders.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Museum of the Former US Embassy in Tehran, and I wanted to share my experience. Firstly, I was pleasantly surprised by the affordable price of admission, which was only 100,000 Iranian rials (approximately 2 US dollars). It's great to see that Iran has opened up this historic place for people to come and explore. The museum houses a collection of equipment and artifacts from the former US embassy, some of which you can see in my photos. While the museum itself is not very large, it offers a comprehensive glimpse into the history of the embassy. You can easily explore everything within 30 minutes or even less. One thing I appreciated about the museum is that they have English texts available for those who can't read Farsi. This makes it accessible and enjoyable for a wider range of visitors. It's a thoughtful gesture that enhances the overall experience. In conclusion, I would recommend visiting the Museum of the Former US Embassy in Tehran at least once. It's a unique opportunity to witness a significant piece of history. I would like to express my gratitude to the museum management for opening this place to visitors. Thank you!

Extremely interesting place, brimming with history. As a Westerner, the tour offers a surprisingly (I know, I was stereotyping before I went) unbiased view of the entire student hostage situation in 1979. Museum is apparently private and not owned by the government. The shocking images seem to be there as a historical remembrance and I heard Americans visit the museum too. Go check it! The guide (Ali) was absolutely amazing! Great guy, fluent English and knows a lot about the history and all kinds of side trivia. Would recommend to just go and chat to him haha. Ask him about movies!
