Cobh has quite a few very steep little lanes and streets leading down to the water’s edge, with colourful houses and quite a nice assortment of buildings. One such street is West View Street, located just west of St. Colman's Cathedral. The 23 colourful houses at 1 to 23 West View Street were built in the 1850s, pressed right against each other and on 23 different levels on this very steep hill. Collectively they are called the Deck of Cards because, as the locals joke, if the house at the bottom of the hill, Street No 23, fell down, all the others would tumble on it, just like a deck of cards. The roofs of these houses form a perfectly even stair step down the hill.
Other than each being painted in a different colour from its neighbour, externally they all look much the same; a single front entrance door and step at the lower end of the slope and a window to the left, and a central attic or skylight window above a central bay window on the second floor, with a gable roof.
