Cobh has quite a few very steep little lanes and streets leading down to the water’s edge, with colourful houses and quite a nice assortment of buildings. One such street is West View Street, located just west of St. Colman's Cathedral. The 23 colourful houses at 1 to 23 West View Street were built in the 1850s, pressed right against each other and on 23 different levels on this very steep hill. Collectively they are called the Deck of Cards because, as the locals joke, if the house at the bottom of the hill, Street No 23, fell down, all the others would tumble on it, just like a deck of cards. The roofs of these houses form a perfectly even stair step down the hill.

Other than each being painted in a different colour from its neighbour, externally they all look much the same; a single front entrance door and step at the lower end of the slope and a window to the left, and a central attic or skylight window above a central bay window on the second floor, with a gable roof.

The most beautiful and iconic place in Cobh. This place is a must visit if you're visiting Cork or the south-west of Ireland. There is a small park just opposite of the famous houses where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful view on a calm and peaceful day. During the summer months you'll see flowers planted by the house owners that increases the natural beauty of this place. Keep in mind though the slope is pretty steep especially for old age folks. Kids love the colorful houses and you could also see the ocean right from near the houses. This place is iconic for the photoshoot enthusiasts. There is plenty of on-street and nearby parking space for around 12-15 cars. It is paid parking from Monday to Saturday during normal hours and on Sunday it's free. Be mindful that the parking spaces can get filled up pretty quickly. St. Colman's Cathedral (the biggest church in Ireland) is just 5 minutes away. There are many pubs and restaurants within a walking distance of...
