I just love anything like this. Such Beautiful views of the Irish sea and the town. Great ruins to walk around, St Declan’s Oratory, monastery and round tower.
The original monastery was founded during the 5th century by St Declan.
The round tower is from sometime in the 12th century. It is a great example of a round tower!
The oratory is said to house the burial of St Declan himself. The oratory was repaired in the 17th century.
There are some amazing bible scenes depicted on one of the walls are absolutely magnificent. You could spend a good while looking at these to try to figure out what is being depicted. Although you can very clearly see Adam and Eve and the judgment of Solomon.
There are some upright stones, I think 5th/6th century grave type stones with early Irish script. Amazing to look at. Are these called Oghan stones??
The site seems to be well kept and maintained and it is in such a beautiful setting. Hard to beat this one that’s for sure. Lovely site and lovely area. When you have the weather on your side it is so...
