the Arco del Meloncello is a Historic Structure in Bologna Italy. It is an Elegant Baroque-Style Arch, Built in 1732-1733, Designed by the Architects Carlo Francesco Dotti & his Collaborator Francesco Galli Bibiena. The Arch Serves as a Covered Portico & an Architectural Feature of the long Portico di San Luca, which Connects the City Center of Bologna to the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca, a Church Located on a hill Overlooking the city.

The Arco del Meloncello is Located at the Intersection Where the Portico Crosses a Road. Its Unique Curved Design Allows the Portico to Elegantly Transition Over the Road while Maintaining Vontinuity. It is an Iconic Landmark & a Fine Example of Baroque...

The Meloncello Arch is charming curved arch structure that is found around 1.5 km along the famous Portico di San Luca. It has a important and unique purpose of providing a continuation of the portico structure while crossing over Via Saragozza and turning to the southwest for the ascent up to the monastery.

The structure was built between 1721-1732 and is Rococo in style. It is elegantly designed and a delightful addition to what is already a remarkable architectural achievement in the San Luca Portico. We really liked Arco del Meloncello for its...

Great starting place for the walk up to the sanctuary St.Luca. anyone can do this walk! It has natural stone paving, and is covered the whole way up, so you won't have the blazing sun on you. I parked just at the 'Arco', and you can operate the parking meter with a credit card, or pay with coins. The ice cream place won't change your money unless you buy something but they are friendly. The walk is fantastic of course. All the locals do it when they have an...

A beautiful architectural flourish at the edge of Bologna, where the long walk to San Luca truly begins. Built in 1732 by Carlo Francesco Dotti, its sweeping curves lift the portico gracefully over the road below. I loved how it blends elegance with function; originally for pilgrims, later raised to let trains pass underneath. It’s a quiet but striking reminder of how Bologna weaves history and practicality into one continuous story.

The hilly part of the Via San Luca starts at the Arco del Meloncello and takes approximately 2.3 km to reach the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca. Wikipedia declares the gradient to range from 10.8 to 18%. It is taxing at the beginning, but then you get used to the rhythm and it really is a pleasant walk. The scenery is picturesque.
