I think this was my favourite place to visit in Tuscany. We stumbled upon at accidentally, but what a hidden gem it is!

It has a fully preserved medieval castle with the frescos mostly intact, which I have not seen anywhere else.

If you can find the Belltower entrance from the garden, near the bathrooms, the view from there is amazing, and you can see San Gimignano in the distance.

We actually saw San Gimi from pretty much every town we visited, and from every pre-medieval castle, in Tuscany, because they were all built on top of the hills.

The nice thing about it is that Certaldo Alto is off the beaten path and is not crowded, like Volterra & San Gimi are.

Buy the combo ticket for the Castle, The Cloister, and Casa de B. Make sure you visit all the dungeons in the cloister and the Castle.

For some reason Google reviews is not allowing me to post photos, but I will do my best to get...

Very beautiful medieval village, on top of a hill. Easily accessible by the Funicolare from the modern day Certaldo. Free parking is available at the west side of the train station. You can walk to the Funicolare in about 10 minutes, using the passage under the tracks at the train station. The Funicolare runs about every 15 minutes and costs € 1,80 (return ticket). The village itself is small but very lovely. The castle at the far end (from the Funiculare) is free to visit. Climbing the clock tower is well worth the effort, the view is stunning. Views over the surrounding area are beautiful almost everywhere in the village. You can view the town of San Gimignano on top of its hill from nearly everywhere in Certaldo Alto. Well...

this hilltop town in Tuscany is a nice 2 hour visit while you are in the area. For example, it can be combined with a stop at San Gimignano which is nearby.

We parked at the train station and walked around 10 minutes to a funicular which takes you to the top. It costs to go up the wall which surrounds the town, but the same ticket provides entrance to a small but very interesting armor museum.

there is a public restroom on the main street which leads to the center of the town from the drop off point of...

Small medieval town much quiter than San Gimignano but with similar look. Moreover Certaldo Alto is the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, one of the italian greatest novelist and friend of Dante Alighieri. Nice tapas and wine bar such as Enoteca Boccaccio where to have a lunch/dinner or an aperitivo meeting local people. L antica fonte is also a great place to have the perfect meal.. At Hotel Il Castello there is often live jazz music and other entertainments at sunset.
