What a lovely small town Certaldo is! In the heart of Val d'Elsa, we visited it on our way back to Firenze from a morning visit to San Gimignano, and had a great time. There are two parts to this charming city - Certaldo Basso, which is the lower part in the valley which is mainly residential with some businesses, and Certaldo Alto, the old-world medieval part at the top of the hill, with Palazzo Pretorio, author Giovanni Bocaccio's house, as well as historic churches, a museum, several great restaurants, and a great view. Once parked for free at the bottom, the funicolare is a great and fast way to get to the top, and well worth the nominal fee (€1,70 round trip). The railway is a short walk from the mainline station, and the ride takes a few minutes to reach the top.
